The 1970 Mustang Boss 302 was built as Ford’s homologation special for the Trans-Am racing series.

It was designed to compete directly against the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and Dodge Challenger T/A. The car combined aggressive styling, track-bred suspension, and a high-revving V8 that made it a standout among muscle cars of the late ’60s and early ’70s.

The Boss 302’s engine loved to rev, with its sweet spot well above 5,000 rpm—very different from the big-block Mustangs that relied more on brute torque.

As to racing pedigree, well, lets just say that the Boss was Ford’s weapon in the SCCA Trans-Am series. In 1970, driven by Parnelli Jones, the Boss 302 clinched the championship against Chevrolet, cementing its legend.

ABOUT THIS CAR

  • Collectibility & Values - Produced in limited numbers (about 7,013 units in 1970). Highly sought-after today, with values depending on originality and condition with driver-quality examples commanding USD $70,000–$100,000 and pristine/restored models: $120,000–$200,000+. This one is especially desirable with the shaker hood, rare color options, and documented history, Marti report etc.
  • Engine & Performance - Engine: 302 cubic inch (5.0L) high revving small block V8, designed with a solid-lifter camshaft, four-barrel carburetor, and Cleveland-style cylinder heads. Factory rating of 290 hp, but real-world figures were closer to 350–375 hp. Standard 4-speed manual with a Hurst shifter. Top speed around 120–125 mph.
  • As to handling, this was not just a straight line car. Oh no...this beast was built to corner as well.  Ford equipped it with front and rear sway bars for flatter cornering, Quick-ratio steering and competition suspension with firmer springs, shocks, and front disc brakes.
  • The Boss 302 was widely praised for its balance and handling precision. Yes, this car came with a race-tuned suspension straight from Ford’s Trans-Am program making it one of the best-driving muscle cars of the era. On a road course, it felt closer to a European sports car than a typical Detroit muscle machine.
  • As to styling, the 1970 model received subtle updates from the ’69 such as redesigned front with sport lamps in the grille, rear-end revisions with new taillights and rear panel, optional reflective “Boss” side stripes, functional front air dam and rear deck spoiler and a shaker hood scoop (optional) for extra flair. It had an aggressive stance that perfectly matched its performance intent.
  • As to Interior, it was simple but functional—high-back bucket seats, woodgrain dash accents, and a three-spoke steering wheel. It had sparse luxury, but focused on the driver and options included a tachometer, AM/FM radio, and fold-down rear seat.
  • On the street, it looks mean with its stripes, spoilers, and optional shaker hood. On the track, it proved its worth—helping Parnelli Jones and Ford take the 1970 Trans-Am Championship.

The 1970 Mustang Boss 302 remains one of the most balanced and exciting muscle cars of its time. Built to corner born to win, this is where muscle meets handling and precision and while it may not have the raw power of the Boss 429 or the big-block Mach 1s, its rev-happy small-block and race-bred suspension made it the true driver’s Mustang.

Waimak Classic Cars is not aware of any specific defects with the vehicle, however (a) such a vehicle being a classic vehicle may have mechanical breakdowns, electrical failures at inconvenient times and maintenance costs being part of and parcel of ownership of a classic vehicle; (b) reliability is a combination of the particular nature of the classic vehicle, how it is being driven, how it has been maintained, and to a certain extent luck; (c) because of the age of the vehicle, and its propensity to rust, it is likely that the vehicle would have been fully or partially restored, or at least repainted at some point in its life, maybe even more than once. Waimak Classic Cars does not know, and cannot give advice on how good any restoration work on the vehicle had been.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the vehicle is being sold as a classic car; that in terms of the Act and the nature of the goods, the vehicle is an old car, bike or boat, that may have visual and hidden faults, unlike a new motor vehicle.
