1960 Jaguar MK IX

Specifications

Description

In the finest Jaguar tradition, the Mark IX represented evolution rather than revolution. Its imposing four-door body retained the stately elegance of the Mark VIII, but beneath that unmistakable silhouette lay a host of meaningful improvements that created one of Jaguar’s most accomplished luxury saloons.

At its heart was the magnificent 3.8-litre twin-carburetor XK engine, a refined version of the power plant that had already proven itself so successfully in the legendary D-type racing car. Smooth, powerful and remarkably capable, it transformed the Mark IX into an exceptional high-speed cruiser, combining effortless performance with the refinement expected of a flagship Jaguar.

Produced at Jaguar’s famous Browns Lane factory in Coventry for only three years, the Mark IX was limited to just over 10,000 examples. With its racing-derived engineering, sumptuous interior and commanding road presence, it remains a distinguished expression of Jaguar’s golden era, when grace, space and pace were delivered in truly grand style.

ABOUT THIS CAR

  • Originally purchased new by Farmers Holding Company in Auckland for the use of its General Manager; an appropriately prestigious beginning for Jaguar’s flagship saloon.
  • Sold in 1964 to an airline pilot before passing to a dedicated Jaguar enthusiast in 1968.
  • Acquired by the previous owner in 1996 with approximately 84,000 miles recorded, giving the car an interesting and traceable New Zealand ownership history.
  • Subjected to a comprehensive strip-down refurbishment in 1996.
  • Restoration work included a bare-metal repaint, new leather upholstery, a complete interior retrim, extensive rechroming and substantial mechanical attention.
  • The restoration is supported by an impressive collection of photographs and receipts.
  • Powered by Jaguar’s renowned 3.8-litre, twin-carburetor XK six-cylinder engine; smooth, powerful and ideally suited to relaxed long-distance touring.
  • Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, providing excellent stopping performance for a luxury saloon of this period.
  • Power-assisted steering makes this substantial Jaguar remarkably pleasant and manageable to drive.
  • Beautiful bodywork and paintwork present the Mark IX’s stately lines to full effect.
  • The luxurious cabin features beautiful leather upholstery, genuine timber appointments and the wonderfully period touch of three cigar lighters.
  • Period-style whitewall tyres complete its commanding 1950s appearance.
  • A large and luxurious Jaguar offering Rolls-Royce-like presence, style and occasion, without the comparable ownership cost.
  • A fresh engine service and general maintenance inspection will be completed upon sale, ensuring the car is ready for its next custodian to enjoy.

These magnificent Jaguar “luxobarges” have style, space and character to spare. Once favoured by society figures, spivs and wide boys alike, the Mark IX has a commanding presence that few classics can match. Its generous dimensions make it exceptionally comfortable over long distances, while its Browns Lane pedigree imparts that unmistakable sense of occasion found only in a great Jaguar.

As the ultimate development of Jaguar’s traditional separate-chassis saloon, the Mark IX combined the powerful 3.8-litre XK engine with power steering and four-wheel disc brakes. It offers more space, greater rarity and a surprisingly sporting drive, yet can still cost less than a comparable 3.8-litre Mk2. Although values have risen considerably, the Mark IX continues to represent an impressive amount of motor car for the money.

With restoration costs for the substantial body, extensive timberwork and leather interior now extremely high, properly restored and well-documented examples are becoming increasingly sought after. Of the 10,005 Mark IXs produced, relatively few survive today in genuinely good condition. While no classic car’s future value can be guaranteed, the model’s rarity, imposing character and position as the final evolution of Jaguar’s grand 1950s saloon give exceptional examples strong long-term collector appeal.
