1968 Triumph TR5

Specifications

Description

This very attractive British TR5 was one of 8450 cars manufactured between 1967 and 1968 for the US market, at the time to meet new 1967 Federal Laws and safety regulations.

Designed by Italian Stylist Giovanni Michelotti, it was developed and improved from the previous model (the TR4A) by the use of their very driveable six cylinder low compression engine. It is in fact a very economical motor with up to 35MPG being recorded.

The TR250 was built alongside the TR5Pi, that was supplied to the rest of the world. These cars were campaigned successfully with great records in the US beating many other marques on the track including the Shelby GT350.

ABOUT THIS CAR

  • MINT CONDITION!
  • Four owners to date - the first taking delivery from the factory in Coventry UK, then it was driven across Europe and then shipped it home to the USA. Unfortunately, a few months later, this owner was killed in an aircraft crash. The next and last USA owner (who drove it 200 miles a day to and from LA to his work at NASA) had it from six months old until its sale to its first NZ owner in 1995.
  • At time of entry in NZ, the car had traveled 120806 miles from new and circa 4000miles later, the first NZ owner had it rebuilt from the ground up (Restoration by Mehrtens Kwik Fit Ltd 1995) to original colour and trim, and the car's condition today is testament to their care and attention to detail. He owned it for 16 years.
  • The second (and previous) owner owned the car for 10 years in Canterbury.
  • This example is one of six known in NZ and the Signal Red colour has all the factory options.
  • To date, this car has traveled 78293 miles since restoration, taking part in many tours and outings.
  • Six Cylinders, OHV, 2498cc, 8.5 to 1 compression ratio, carburetor-ed, lead free.
  • 104 BHP @ 4500rpm
  • Four speed with Overdrive in 2nd, 3rd and top.
  • Independent Rear Suspension & pinion steering
  • 15"wire wheels
  • Disk Brakes at front / Drums at rear.
  • Factory Options include Go Fast Stripes, le mans Fuel cap, Luggage rack, Overdrive, Tonneau Covers, Driving Lamps and wire wheels.
  • Comes with electronic ignition, Spin on oil filter, new valves fitted and hardened seats on exhaust, Lightened cam followers and lightened valve caps.
  • Serviced every 2K Miles - Some servicing / maintenance history available.
  • This car is immaculate - straight as body, with lovely paintwork. Upholstery like new. Pirelli tyres, Beautiful chrome work, good clean soft top.

These really fun to drive TR's are priced for their character and nowadays are commanding good prices.
