Mercedes Benz 250SE 1966
Specifications
Description
A very interesting classic car indeed!
Sir James Fletcher, the founder of NZ's largest private company was in Germany in September 1965 and attended the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Mercedes Benz was displaying for the first time the new Mercedes Benz ‘S' Class Sedan – theW108 Series. (see photo 17). He was impressed with the new model and during this visit he specified the car we see today, the leather option alone costing the equivalent of a 1965 Morris Minor! In German currency, the car sold then at DM18500 (Deutsche Marks).
Discussions with the Fletcher family and evidence from the car itself demonstrates that it was built in October / November 1965 and shipped immediately to New Zealand. The car was first registered in New Zealand on the 21st day of January 1966 to the Fletcher Trust Investment Company. It was Sir James Fletcher's personal vehicle car and the only drivers were the owner himself and occasionally the Fletcher Company official special occasion driver.
The car remained in the Fletcher Company until the 1980's when it was sold to a Mercedes Benz Canterbury Car Club member then sold again 1987 by the last owner on record.
This car was serviced from new by Mercedes Benz dealers and Royce Paterson when working for W.J Scott Motors (MB Agents) clearly remembers servicing the car during its early life. Later he continued the association in his own business when the car transferred to the second owner. The third owner serviced the car at Kevin Burt – renowned Mercedes specialist in Christchurch.
During a Fletcher family trip to the West Coast a leaking water system hose caused loss of fluid with subsequent overheating of the engine. The car was transported to Christchurch by rail car were the engine was totally stripped and repaired. The other two private owners, both Mercedes Car Club members have maintained the car to the highest standards and have enjoyed the pride of ownership that such a unique car engenders.
This is a magnificent car to drive; a reliable and most desirable classic car in very good overall condition. Nice original leather interior. A working Becker factory radio is still with car.
Very straight body with very good paint. All doors still close like new. Great motor, Very clean engine bay and boot. All mechanics and electrics in very good working order.
Included in price are personalised plate, some spare parts, Tow Bar (all the provisions are there including wiring) and Mercedes Benz Factory Service / Maintenance Manuals / Spare Parts Catalogues / General servicing and information literature / factory original sales documents and books.
It would appeal to an enthusiast looking for a remarkable example of this model and will only be sold to a good home.
