"Hi Jesmond & Gloria, Confirming my email of earlier today the Jag arrived early this morning understandably extremely dirty after weathering the worst storm to hit the country so far this year while being freighted, but has washed up beautifully and we look forward to taking it for a spin or two - or three - over the next couple of days before the next storm hits the country. We have nothing but praise for the professional way in which you both dealt with us - right from when we turned up in ChCh to take a look at the Jag - storing it for a few weeks for us and arranging the freighting of it to Palmerston North. The whole process was totally flawless and after having purchased a vintage/classic car from you cannot imagine buying an older car any other way than through Waimak Classic Cars. It has been a real pleasure dealing with both of you and thanks very much for the bottle of Moscato Rose."Bryan & Catherine Abraham, Palmerston North
Jaguar saloons led the field in production and touring car races during much of the 60s and Coombs incorporated race-proven engineering modifications that made the 3.8 litre MK2 not just considerably faster, but smoother, less stressed, and totally reliable.
John Coombs owned a Jaguar dealership in Guilford, Surrey, UK. He had significant race experience and his dealership simply got it right for a fortunate few racing enthusiasts, that included Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori.
Coombs options included 9:1 pistons, balanced crank, con rods, and clutch assembly. A lightened flywheel, gas-flowed head and trumpet carburetor intakes were also fitted. For an extra four pounds sterling the cylinder head would be machined to give 9.5:1 compression. Some other menu items included, hand made exhaust with straight through pipes or performance ‘silencers', Koni shocks, high ratio steering box, lowered ride height, and long-range petrol tank.
A fully modified Coombs MKII easily reached 100 mph in company with the E-type, a full nine seconds ahead of the factory supplied version! It was the fastest and best handling saloon car available at that time !
NOTE: We understand that this car may have some Coombs options fitted to it but unable to ascertain as to which of the above mentioned Coombs options are available with this car, if anything at all. Hence why price offered does not reflect it as being a Coombs car but a standard 3.8 Manual with overdrive MK2.
