Wind Back Time
Humber Coventry Royal Humberette 1904
Specifications
Description
A car, which was one of the first to be driven in the streets of Alexandra, New Zealand, is now 100 years on and remains fully road worthy.
This 1904 Coventry six and a half horsepower Humberette first belonged to late Alexandra dredgemaster and engineer Capt. Robert Ross, who was one of the first Alexandra man to own a car. Robert was an immigrant from Scotland, whilst his wife Sarah was born in Australia. They had a family of four girls and lived in Alexandra until their deaths in 1945 and 1958 respectively.
After Robert's death, his wife sought a new home for the Humber. The family of of the late engineer Bob Turnbull became the next owners of the car and Bob was given the car in 1946 and had it roadworthy to take it from Christchurch to Dunedin with his brother on New Year's Eve in 1952. It took them 19 hours and 55 minutes to get to Dunedin from Christchurch.
These Humberettes were built by a bicycle company. It is believed that there are only about a dozen of these examples left in the world and it is thought that this is is the only remaining model in New Zealand.
What an amazing piece of New Zealand history. This museum piece is in concours condition and very sweet to drive.
