Wind Back Time
1990 BMW Baur 325i
Specifications
Description
The BMW 3 Series has been produced consistently since 1975, when it was code named the E21.
Back then, there were only two body styles: a coupe, which is what everyone bought and a convertible, courtesy of a Stuttgart-based coach builder named Baur, who had a long history with BMW and apparently saw the market for a BMW convertible before BMW did.
The Baur is a convertible of unusual proportions. For one thing, it isn't a full convertible: the top panel comes off, and only the soft top over the rear window retracts like a typical convertible top. In roof open mode, the A-pillar is still in place but so are the B-pillar, and the C-pillar. And there's a huge bar connecting the B-pillar on the left side of the car to the one on the right side – even when the top is off.
The Baur E21 cars had another unusual aspect: roof storage. Because the regular 3-Series wasn't built with a rear-hinged trunk to accommodate the folding roof, the convertible soft top just kind of sits on top of the trunk when it's down. The benefit is that cargo volume is the same as a regular E21 coupe.
ABOUT THIS CAR
- Targa-style convertible (fixed rollover (new) hood + removable roof panels)
- E30 3 Series Platform (most commonly based on 316, 318i, 320i, or 325i)
- Produced by Baur Karosserie, Stuttgart (under BMW license)
- This unique design included the targa-style roof with removable panels and folding rear soft-top that makes it distinctive plus it keeps the car’s structural rigidity better than a full convertible.
- The Baur is much rarer than the factory E30 convertible with only around 10,865 TC2 units built between 1983–1991.
- These cars have classic E30 Appeal with sharp steering, great chassis balance, and robust engines. Whether you get a 318i or a 325i, you’re getting a piece of BMW’s golden era. The 325i of course is the higher spec’d option.
- Also, better weather protection when compared to the full convertible - the Baur's design often seals better and has less scuttle shake.
- Current market on these is still relatively affordable, but there is increasing interest from enthusiasts.
- This is a six-cylinder model with complete roof panels and various documentation.
- A Future classic especially given the E30’s rising status and the Baur’s rarity.
- STUNNING EXAMPLE!
The 1990 BMW Baur TC2 is an unusual and charismatic version of the beloved E30. It offers a blend of coupe rigidity and open-air driving, with a quirky twist.
While some may argue that it may not be as sleek as the factory convertible, it stands out in a crowd and has growing appeal among collectors of rare BMW oddities.
Will be sold WOF'd and Registered if sold in New Zealand.
