1988 Jaguar XJ-S SPORT

Specifications

Description

A Sportier XJ-S for 1988...Yes, the most successful sports car ever produced by Jaguar had some significant changes for 1988.

The continued upward progress of the jaguar XJ-S range is remarkable. It has been the most successful sporting car ever produced by Jaguar., which is renowned for such cars. The SS100, the XK Series and even the E Type, classically famous examples of the genre as they are, have each been outsold by the XJ-S. The reasons are not hard to find. from the beginning, the XJ-S has been a unique blend of sporting style, performance and outstanding value for money and in all those aspects, the range has matured and improved since its introduction.

For 1988, the appeal of the range to sporting drivers in particular was greatly enhanced. Externally, the obvious change to the 146MPH, 3.6coupe was the fitment of the sport alloy wheels with low profile tyres. In themselves, these have a tangible effect upon the handling of the car. Some other important changes are subcutaneous. There were major revisions to suspension and steering, uprated front and newly introduced rear roll bars, modified springs and shock absorber settings and modified steering gear.

Two other features make a useful contribution to this pleasantly relaxed but sporting character. First there is a new steering wheel (trimmed in real leather of course) with a thicker rim that hitherto; a wheel  which is absolutely in tune with the car's new nature. Secondly the front seats have been given a more bolstered shape, which provides the extra support and location.

Jaguar referred to this model in their advertising as the XJ-S Sport. The term is certainly justified, with handling, which responds to enthusiastic driving in a more positive way than its predecessors and these changes transformed what could have been described as a civilised sports car into a civilised sports car.
