1986 Ford Capri 2.8ltr V6

Specifications

Description

The 2.8 Injection sat right at the top of the Capri hierarchy in its later years.

When Ford Motor Company introduced the fuel-injected Cologne V6, it transformed the car from a stylish coupe into a genuinely quick grand tourer.

May not seem much now but at the time, that performance put it in the same conversation as entry-level sports coupes from Germany and Italy but at a much lower price.

ABOUT THIS CAR

  • Engine: 2.8L Cologne V6 (fuel injected)
  • Power: 160 bhp
  • 0–60 mph: 7.7 seconds
  • Gearbox: 5-speed manual (a big upgrade over earlier cars)
  • This is an excellent example, that has benefited from careful restoration over the years. The paintwork and decals, which were new at the time, are now over 20 years old, giving the car an increasingly “original” appearance, even though it is not entirely untouched. When the car was stripped, no rust was found except for the expected external areas, which was professionally removed and the engine bay remains completely original, aside from mechanical work.
  • Interior condition - Recaro seats, dash, and switchgear all preserved big value driver
  • Standard engine bay - no modifications equal higher desirability
  • Low wear indicators - Steering wheel, firm seats, pedals consistent with low mileage.
  • Collector value perspective - among Capris, the 2.8 Injection is one of the most collectible mainstream versions (excluding ultra-rare RS models).
  • Service history available.
  • Cars like this sit in a sweet spot because of their classic looks (long bonnet, short tail), analog driving feel, usable performance and strong nostalgia appeal.
  • This is not just a nice Capri but a collector-grade, reference-quality example, exactly the kind of car that tend to appreciate steadily.
  • Torque-rich V6 - effortless acceleration, especially mid-range - long-legged gearing, great for cruising - mechanical feel i.e.: no driver aids, very connected.
  • First Registered in New Zealand in 1995 - imported from the UK.
  • New rear parcel shelf.
  • Stainless steel exhaust.
  • Personalised plates come with car.
  • Odometer in Miles.

By the early 1980s, the Capri platform was already over a decade old. Most manufacturers would’ve let it fade but Ford Motor Company essentially reinvented it with the Injection model. Earlier V6 Capris used carburettors (including the Essex engine), but these switched to Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection.

The Cologne V6 gave the car Sharper throttle response, more consistent power delivery and Better cold starting and drivability. This wasn’t just a power bump. It made the car feel more modern and refined, especially compared to carburetted rivals.

The Capri wins on simplicity, parts availability and everyday usability. The Capri’s identity as an aspirational everyday sports car doesn’t stop there. It is also a symbol of upward mobility and a cultural icon of the 70s–80s. This emotional pull is a huge part of why values for these classic Ford’s keep climbing.

Will be sold WOF'd and registered IF sold in New Zealand.
