1983 Saab 900 Turbo

Specifications

Description

This is one quirky turbo four-seater coupe!

The disappearance of Saab as a volume car-making brand left a big hole in the automotive world. Nobody quite managed to pull off the combination of engineering pedigree, almost-premium branding and, well, sheer quirkiness.

Turbocharging was once the domain of the fast and exotic, till Saab got to work and offered the Saab 900.

ABOUT THIS CAR

  • One family Owned From New.
  • Car was sold new in the UK and was an Owner Import - First Registered in New Zealand in 1990
  • Car can best be described as a used, tidy example.
  • Its been well maintained and serviced and there is nothing wrong or sinister with it.
  • Comes with servicing records and various other documentation including Haynes Workshop manual
  • Some stone chips as expected for a car of its age.
  • Interior is in very good order. Cabin is nice and clean (Upholstery, Carpets, door cards and hood lining are all in excellent condition).
  • Boot tidy (some rips on carpet in boot and shelf in boot pretty worn but all there).
  • Comes with a set of well used Saab rubber mats.
  • As can be seen from photos, rubber bumpers have a few marks.
  • Mechanically sound...Car Drives very nice. Around town and at slow speeds, it feels very normal, almost mundane. It’s responsive enough and an easy car to drive, with very well-balanced power steering that’s suited to what feels like a large, heavy vehicle. But there’s nothing much special going on. Out in the open, however, the 900 becomes a different beast. Once the turbo cuts in, you’re pushed back in your seat by a surge of acceleration that takes the unwary by surprise. In fact, there’s no need to drop a gear to overtake...just floor the accelerator and the turbocharger does the rest.
  • Handling and safety are more than a match for the potential to get into trouble. The front-wheel drive is predictable and neutral, there’s little roll, the ride is smooth and well-damped, and the brakes are well up to the task.
  • Very durable car...incredibly durable actually. Some owners claim these cars can cover over 400,000 miles without a major overhaul.
  • Good tires. Good battery.
  • Comes with two sets of keys.

The 900 is quirky and distinctive compared with its contemporary rivals, and that makes it a very appealing proposition as a classic tinged with '80s nostalgia. Add the performance credentials of the Turbo, and it's a car that you really can use and enjoy daily.

It all adds up to a very practical and usable modern classic.

Will be sold WOF'd and Registered if sold in New Zealand.
