"Good morning Jesmond and Gloria. Just to let you know the Jag is now in Kerikeri. Picked it up from Capital City Ford on Sunday as arranged. They contacted me last Friday to say it was there and that they had given it a wash. (Nice of them). We took the trip North over three days and arrived home last night. Travelled 1000kms with no hitches. Yesterday was a good test for its water tightness as we had periods of torrential rain between Auckland and Kerikeri. No problems at all though. Thanks for the bottle of wine and best regards,"Peter & Pam Scahill, Keri Keri, New Zealand
The P6 was a radical new product for its maker.
Rover was known as a maker of refined and staid cars for the professional classes until 1963. That was when its young engineers’ bright ideas were let out on an unsuspecting world in the Rover 2000. Base-unit construction with unstressed panels, all-round disc brakes, racing-type De Dion rear suspension, even a rallying programme… it all lowered the average age of a Rover buyer by 10 years. The four-cylinder 2000 became a 2200 in 1973, after being joined by the pocket-rocket V8-powered 3500.
It had styling that was influenced by the Citroen DS, and possessed a skeleton structure and modern styling that really were a million miles away from the P4, which was still in production when the P6 was launched.
The company gambled that it would appeal to traditionally conservative Rover customers, as well as attracting new ones. The bid worked, and the P6 went on to become a huge commercial success.
The P6 caught on rapidly, selling in huge numbers and becoming a favourite with lawbreakers - and enforcers.

Revolutionary when new, and still well respected today, Rover’s P6 makes a practical and enjoyable classic.
Back in the day, the Rover P6 epitomised quality and sophistication that rivals struggled to match. It was advanced, yet didn't scare buyers - in fact, it became Britain's favourite executive car during the 1960s and '70s.
Good examples of these cars are becoming rarer by the day. They're awesome to drive and a good classic to own.
