1972 Citroen DS Special

Specifications

Description

When the DS was unveiled at the 1955 Paris salon, there were gasps of amazement all round – and rightly so.

Looking like something that had come from outer space, the DS was revolutionary in every sense with jaw dropping styling; futuristic and aerodynamic, and a complex hydraulic system operated the self-leveling suspension, brakes, steering and semi-automatic gearshift.

To appreciate the DS, you also have to appreciate a novel approach to automotive design and, seeing as this is a Citroen, also a somewhat stubborn desire to make things quirky just for the hell of it. There’s no denying that these Citroens take more looking after than most classics, and their iconic European status is now being reflected in rising prices. But the rewards are considerable; a driving experience so smooth that it’s like being on a magic carpet, blended with enough eccentricities to keep you constantly amused and bemused.

Car makers frequently harp on about how their latest model moves the goal posts – how it’s a game changer that’ll go down in history as an all-time great. But of course very few cars are ever really all that memorable – and certainly not many family cars. But occasionally something comes along that really does change the automotive landscape – something that pushes the boundaries. Such a car was the Citroen DS, launched well over half a century ago.

Even now the car looks sensational, is technically advanced and amazingly aerodynamic – dependable advanced engineering, reliable, safe family transport, fully capable of holding its own in city or motorway traffic. Almost 60 years on it’s a classic that still astounds – but what do you expect from a car that was decades ahead of its time?

Stylish, comfortable, spacious, practical, generally reliable, easy to maintain...Its fair to say that no car shouted advancement through engineering quite like Citroen. As fascinating as it remains infuriating, the DS is not everybody’s ideal classic. But it’s certainly one that grows on you…
