Wind Back Time
1967 Triumph TR4A IRS
Specifications
Description
The Triumph TR4A IRS occupies a sweet spot in British roadster history!
It blends the classic Michelotti styling of the TR4 with a more refined driving experience, thanks to its independent rear suspension.
Built between 1965 and 1967, it’s often seen as the most usable of the early TR series cars.
ABOUT THIS CAR
- Visually, the TR4A carried over the sharp, Italian-influenced lines of the TR4, with its wide grille, cut-down doors, and pronounced wheel arches. Subtle detail changes, including a new grille treatment and badging, marked it out, but the overall look remains pure ’60s British sports car - simple, elegant, and purposeful.
- Under the bonnet sat the familiar 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering around 100 horsepower. While not blisteringly fast, the TR4A’s real advance came from its independent rear suspension. It gave the car far better ride comfort and composure than its live-axle predecessor, particularly on rougher roads. Steering is heavy at low speeds but communicative once moving, and the gearbox has that mechanical, direct feel enthusiasts love. It’s more a car for spirited touring than outright performance.
- Inside, the TR4A is basic but charming, with wooden dash trim and supportive bucket seats. Cabin space is snug but adequate.
- As a classic, the TR4A IRS is appreciated for its balance of old-school British sports car character with a more forgiving ride than the earlier TRs. It sits in a sweet spot between the raw, spartan feel of the TR3 and the slightly more refined TR5/TR6 that followed. Collectors value originality and well-maintained IRS models, generally command higher prices than their live-axle counterparts.
- Condition is very good – nice body with lovely paintwork.
- Clean undercarriage and engine bay. Good soft top and clean interior.
- Mechanically sound – good motor – car runs sweet and drives as it should.
- While no formal servicing or restoration records accompany this car, its condition speaks louder than paperwork. The quality of the workmanship, the fit of the body, the presentation of the interior, and the mechanical integrity all point to a sympathetic and thorough restoration carried out at some point in its life. Clearly executed by skilled hands, this work has allowed the car to remain both highly presentable and fully usable today. For collectors, it offers the reassurance of a properly restored motor car - one that has been cherished, maintained, and preserved with care.
The Triumph TR4A IRS may not be the fastest classic roadster, but it delivers a wonderfully authentic 1960s driving experience. With its timeless design, improved suspension, and unmistakable British charm, it’s a car that rewards both spirited drives and leisurely Sunday tours.
