1966 Austin Healey Mk3 3000

Specifications

Description

The Austin-Healey 3000 was BMC's sporting flagship for almost a decade, and many detail changes were made along the way.

The 3000 name was first used in 1959 when the C-Series engine from the 100/6 was upgraded to 2.9-litres (and a nominal for marketing 3-litres), for use in the uprated Farina bodied Westminsters.

The 3000 boasted more power, an improved gearbox and disc brakes on the front.

The best was saved till last though, with the Austin-Healey Mk3, launched in 1964.

Although the looks remained largely the same this was the most powerful Austin-Healey with 148bhp for a maximum speed of 121mph.

ABOUT THIS CAR

  • Chassis #: HBJ8L39985
  • Imported from the UK, this car was first registered in New Zealand in 1999
  • Two long Term Owners in NZ.

  • Restored from the ground up - engine and all (some photos here)
  • This car is pretty tidy - can best be described as an older restoration.
  • Tonneau and Soft Top in good condition.
  • Nice tidy interior showing some age but still in very good order.
  • Lovely paintwork and mechanically very sound.
  • Healthy motor that makes your hair stand on end...in fact, the huge engine in this tiny car gives a great torquey feeling and it sounds fantastic.
  • Comes with Austin Healey books etc.

Nearly 60 years on, this Healey’s sporting intent remains clear. Shifts of the four-speed manual transmission require a deliberate hand, but the gates are clearly defined, the lever’s action precise and mechanical. Once committed to a corner, the lovely wood-and-polished-metal steering wheel offers good feedback. The brake pedal requires a heavy foot, though the front discs and rear drums effectively woah the Healey down. Once you get acclimated with the controls and step up the pace, the chassis reveals that you’re wheeling a willing partner.

British roadsters aren’t universally known for accommodating all sizes, but the Healey’s interior is reasonably roomy for the class.

A perfect late winter’s day and a charming open-topped car have long been a hard-to-beat combination. Austin-Healey’s 3000 Mk III blends an engaging drive and gorgeous lines to match.

The 3000 Mk III is one you buy to enjoy, and enjoy it you will. This car is pure grunt!

Here's your chance to secure a beautiful, sought after classic that's not easy to come by in New Zealand nowadays.
