Wind Back Time
1930 Alvis Silver Eagle SD
Specifications
Description
Seventy - five Silver Eagle SD's were produced by Alvis cars Ltd from 1930 until January 1932.
Eleven are known to survive, the other 10 all in the UK so this is, to the best of our knowledge, the only one in Australasia.
Only fifteen of the shorter wheelbase SE's were produced from June 1930 until May 1931 of which four are known to have survived. THE SD and SE were the latest facelift revised low chassis versions of the earlier SA short, and SB long, wheelbase sports models (Oct 1929 - June 1930). There was never an SC produced. later mid 1930's SF and SG cars are not related to the vintage era Silver Eagles at all and in reality are smaller cheaper Speed 20's, a different generation.
The sports S models were produced in small batches throughout their production run with both car numbers and chassis numbers running concurrent with the more numerous "touring" TA, TB & TC Silver Eagles and the four cylinder 12/50 and 12/60 cars. While produced in two wheelbases the vintage era S sports models all had the narrow 4 foot, 2 inch track unlke the wider and heavier 4 foot 6 inch TA, TB and TC touring models.

Changes of ownership recorded on Original Certificate of Registration - as follows 18-06-1956 Francis Mills of Mt Roskill / 11-07-1956 GGW Gray Motors Auckland / 21-01-1960 Howie Brown.
- In 1964, the owner was John Irvine of Mt Roskill who bought the car as a source of spares for his Alvis 14.75 four door saloon. It had been sitting in the open for several years without body or mudguards but otherwise complete.
- Mr Ervine sold the car in 1968, who took it home to Dunedin and completed a full restoration over the following three years. This included the construction of a new alloy sports tourer built body by Sharp & Mooney in Dunedin based on the Silver Eagle SA 16.95 used to beat the French Blue Train and road tested by Motor sport in June 1930. Being an SD on the longer 9 foot 10 1/2 inch chassis this new body was 6 inches longer then the earlier SA sports tourer and perhaps better looking for it being very much in the style of Vanden Plas.
- Since restoration and registration on 15-11-1971, it had three owners.
- Current NZ number plate FT8380 is in fact an early personalised plate. While FT was a standard late1971 prefix, number 8380 was applied for and granted thus we today have car's chassis number as part of the registration.
- This is a pretty Mint example of a gorgeous looking and well priced Tourer, that comes with many files of endless information, handbooks etc.
- Very well maintained vehicle by people who knew what they're doing. As a result, car starts effortlessly and runs beautifully.
- Various photos and other historic records available including Original Certificate of Registration and other important documents.
