Description
The 1997 Rover 825 V6 Coupé represents a fascinating chapter in British motoring history, combining traditional luxury, elegant styling and refined performance in one of Rover’s most distinctive creations. Introduced as the flagship two-door model of the prestigious Rover 800 Series, the Coupé was designed to appeal to discerning motorists seeking the comfort and sophistication of a luxury saloon with the exclusivity and elegance of a grand tourer. With its sleek, pillarless bodywork, generous proportions and unmistakably British character, it remains an exceptionally handsome motor car that has aged remarkably well.
Powered by Rover’s sophisticated 2.5-litre, 24-valve KV6 engine, coupled to a smooth four-speed automatic transmission, the 825 Coupé delivers effortless performance and relaxed long-distance cruising. Its refined mechanical package is complemented by a beautifully appointed interior featuring sumptuous Connolly leather upholstery, genuine burr walnut veneers and an impressive array of luxury appointments. Built during an era when Rover placed considerable emphasis on craftsmanship, comfort and understated elegance, the Coupé offered a distinctive alternative to the established German and British luxury marques.
Produced in relatively limited numbers and seldom encountered today, the Rover 825 Coupé has become one of the more intriguing and underrated British modern classics of the 1990s. Its combination of rarity, distinctive styling, traditional craftsmanship and everyday usability makes it particularly appealing to enthusiasts seeking something different from the more familiar classics of the period. With surviving examples becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in original and well-preserved condition, the Rover Coupé represents an interesting opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of British motoring heritage at a fraction of the cost of many of its contemporaries.

Built as the flagship two-door model of the Rover 800 range, the Coupé was an uncommon sight even when new, and today represents an increasingly rare and largely overlooked modern classic.
Imported from Japan, this particular example is believed to be one of six or fewer in New Zealand, making it an exceptionally rare offering on our shores. Market Perspective
The Rover 800 Coupé occupies an interesting position in the emerging modern classic market. Produced in considerably smaller numbers than its saloon counterpart, it combines distinctive styling, traditional British craftsmanship and refined V6 performance in a package that remains surprisingly affordable.
As enthusiasts increasingly revisit the overlooked luxury cars of the 1990s, well-preserved and original examples such as this are attracting renewed interest. Rarity, condition and provenance are becoming increasingly important considerations, particularly for models that were never widely represented in markets such as New Zealand.
Unlike many modern classics that have already experienced substantial increases in value, the Rover Coupé continues to offer considerable car for the money. Its limited availability, distinctive character and connection to an important chapter in Rover’s history make it an interesting proposition for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The 1997 Rover 825 Sterling Coupé is much more than simply another luxury car from the 1990s. It represents an era when comfort, craftsmanship and individuality were central to the ownership experience.
With its exceptionally rare New Zealand presence, long-term ownership history, impressive originality and beautifully preserved interior, this example offers an opportunity to acquire something genuinely different.
Rare, elegant and unmistakably British, the Rover Sterling Coupé is an underrated modern classic that deserves considerably more recognition than it receives.
Market Review
From a market perspective, the 1997 Rover 825 V6 Coupé represents an intriguing and largely overlooked opportunity in the emerging modern classic sector.
Believed to be one of six or fewer examples in New Zealand, its rarity alone sets it apart from many of its contemporaries. Despite its exclusivity, elegant pillarless styling, refined V6 performance and beautifully appointed interior, the Rover remains remarkably affordable, offering a level of comfort, luxury and craftsmanship that would ordinarily command considerably more money. For enthusiasts seeking something distinctive without the substantial financial outlay associated with more established luxury classics, the 825 Coupé offers exceptional value for money.
As interest in well-preserved vehicles from the 1990s continues to develop, the Rover Coupé possesses several qualities that could support its long-term collectibility. Limited production, low survival numbers, distinctive British styling and traditional luxury appointments all contribute to its appeal, particularly when accompanied by originality and long-term ownership history. While values have yet to reach those of more recognised collector marques, this arguably presents an opportunity rather than a disadvantage. With so few examples available in New Zealand, finding another could prove considerably more difficult than the purchase price might suggest. A rare, luxurious and thoroughly enjoyable grand tourer, the Rover 825 Coupé offers an appealing combination of exclusivity, affordability and future collector potential.
