Description

The Mercedes-Benz R107 500SL remains one of the most recognisable and desirable luxury roadsters of its era, combining timeless styling with the engineering solidity for which Mercedes-Benz became renowned. Elegant without being ostentatious, the SL successfully blended sports-car character with genuine grand-touring refinement. Its long production life and enduring popularity helped establish the SL as one of the great upmarket roadsters, and today the R107 has matured into a highly regarded modern classic with appeal extending well beyond traditional Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts.

With V8 power, the SL takes on the character of what could best be described as a gentleman’s muscle car. There is ample torque and effortless performance, yet everything is delivered with the refinement expected of a Mercedes-Benz. Rather than demanding to be driven hard, the V8 suits the SL’s personality beautifully: relaxed and smooth when cruising, but with considerable performance available when required. Its combination of substantial build quality, confident road manners and muscular power gives the car a sense of occasion that remains impressive decades later.

Perhaps the SL’s greatest strength is its versatility. With the roof down it is an elegant open-air roadster; with the hardtop fitted it becomes a refined grand tourer capable of covering long distances in considerable comfort. On flowing roads it settles effortlessly into its stride, soaking up the miles while retaining enough sporting ability to make the journey enjoyable. Few cars combine elegance, performance and usability quite so successfully, which is why the R107 continues to attract collectors seeking a classic that can be admired, enjoyed and regularly driven rather than simply stored away.

About this Vehicle

Few classic Mercedes-Benz models capture the spirit of grand touring quite like the legendary R107 SL. Renowned for its exceptional build quality, timeless styling and effortless performance, the 500SL represents an era when Mercedes-Benz engineered its motor cars with little compromise. Solid, sophisticated and beautifully proportioned, these V8-powered roadsters have become highly desirable classics, combining traditional Mercedes-Benz luxury with genuine open-top motoring pleasure.

This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 500SL is a particularly appealing example, boasting low mileage, just one New Zealand owner and excellent overall condition. First registered in New Zealand in 2000, it presents beautifully, with a straight, rust-free body, very nice paintwork and a well-preserved original interior. It is a motor car that has clearly stood the test of time, retaining the quality, character and unmistakable road presence that have made the R107 series so enduringly popular.

Under the bonnet sits Mercedes-Benz’s renowned 5.0-litre V8 engine, developing approximately 240bhp and delivering the sort of smooth, effortless performance for which these cars are celebrated. Paired with a silky-smooth four-speed automatic transmission, the 500SL is a wonderfully accomplished cruiser, offering strong acceleration, excellent low-speed torque and a wonderfully subtle V8 rumble. Whether enjoying a leisurely Sunday drive, travelling across the country or simply heading into town, this is a classic that is every bit as enjoyable to drive as it is to admire.

One of the great attractions of the R107 is its remarkable versatility. With both its removable factory-style hardtop and folding soft top, it offers three distinct motoring experiences. With the roof lowered, it becomes a stylish, breezy summer convertible. Raise the canvas hood and it transforms into a cosy, intimate roadster, while fitting the hardtop creates a quiet, comfortable and beautifully appointed coupe, perfectly suited to cooler weather and longer journeys.

A Classic Built to Last

The R107 Mercedes-Benz has earned an enviable reputation for its robust engineering and exceptional longevity. Often described as being built like a tank, these cars were constructed during an era when durability, refinement and mechanical integrity were paramount. Their solid construction, reassuring road manners and relatively straightforward mechanical design have helped make them among the most usable classic luxury roadsters of their generation.

Unlike many classic sports cars that demand considerable compromise, the 500SL offers a wonderfully civilised driving experience. Its powerful V8, comfortable seating, smooth automatic transmission and impressive ride quality make it a genuine pleasure to use regularly. Properly maintained, these cars can provide many years of dependable classic motoring without sacrificing the comfort and convenience expected of a Mercedes-Benz.

Timeless Style, V8 Character and Everyday Enjoyment

There is something undeniably special about the R107. Its long bonnet, distinctive Mercedes-Benz grille, elegant chrome detailing and beautifully balanced proportions give it a presence that modern motor cars struggle to replicate. It is sporty without being ostentatious, luxurious without being excessive, and powerful without needing to shout about it.

Behind the wheel, the experience is equally rewarding. The V8 delivers a satisfying, understated rumble, pulling strongly from low engine speeds while the automatic transmission makes progress feel almost effortless. The result is a sophisticated grand tourer that is just as happy cruising through town as it is covering long distances on the open road.

This low-mileage, one-NZ-owner 1988 Mercedes-Benz 500SL represents an excellent opportunity to acquire one of Mercedes-Benz’s most celebrated classic roadsters. Beautifully presented, mechanically appealing and offering the versatility of both hardtop and soft-top motoring, it is a motor car to enjoy rather than simply admire.

Whether purchased as a weekend indulgence, a stylish Sunday classic or a distinctive everyday cruiser, this 500SL delivers that wonderful combination of V8 performance, traditional Mercedes-Benz quality and timeless European elegance.

A genuine head-turner, an absolute pleasure to drive and a classic Mercedes-Benz with plenty of character.

Market Review

The Mercedes-Benz R107 has firmly established itself as one of the most desirable modern-classic Mercedes models, with the best examples increasingly being viewed as genuine collector cars rather than simply older luxury roadsters. Its appeal is easy to understand: glamorous styling, V8 performance, exceptional build quality and an unmistakable sense of 1970s and 1980s prestige. The R107 also carries enormous nostalgia, recalling an era when the SL was associated with success, celebrities and effortless continental motoring. Later-production V8 examples are particularly appealing to enthusiasts, combining the classic chrome-era appearance with the benefit of years of development and refinement. As collectors increasingly seek usable classics with strong marque recognition, good provenance and originality, well-preserved R107s are becoming increasingly difficult to replace.

From an investment perspective, the R107 has already moved considerably beyond the days when these cars were simply inexpensive used Mercedes-Benz convertibles. Values have increasingly separated according to condition, specification, originality and history, with exceptional cars commanding a significant premium over average examples. There remains good reason to believe that the finest V8 R107s have further long-term appreciation potential: they are instantly recognisable, relatively practical to own, glamorous enough for special occasions and still thoroughly enjoyable to drive. Most importantly, they possess the combination of nostalgia, desirability and genuine collectibility that tends to underpin the strongest classic-car markets. The R107 may have been produced in substantial numbers, but truly outstanding examples are another matter altogether and it is those cars that collectors are increasingly chasing.
