Description
Introduced in 1967, the Honda CD175 was designed as the dependable touring member of Honda’s increasingly successful 175cc motorcycle family.
Honda described it at the time as a “great new all-rounder”, equally comfortable negotiating busy town streets or settling into a longer journey on the open road. Powered by Honda’s smooth four-stroke parallel-twin engine, the CD175 offered the refinement, economy and reliability that were rapidly establishing Honda as a dominant force in the international motorcycle industry.
Rather than chasing outright sporting performance, the CD175 was built around practicality, comfort and everyday usability. Its relaxed riding position, enclosed chain, understated styling and willing twin-cylinder engine made it an ideal commuter and lightweight touring motorcycle. Produced in various forms through the 1970s, the CD175 became a familiar sight on roads around the world and, today, represents a wonderfully nostalgic reminder of an era when Honda was redefining what riders could expect from a small-capacity motorcycle.

Market Review
The Honda CD175 has developed a loyal following among collectors of early Japanese motorcycles, particularly enthusiasts who appreciate originality, simplicity and nostalgia over outright performance. Once regarded primarily as dependable everyday transport, surviving examples are now increasingly viewed as genuine classics from an important period in Honda’s history. Their approachable size, smooth 174cc parallel-twin engine and unmistakable late-1960s and 1970s styling give the CD175 considerable period charm.
Values remain relatively modest compared with Honda’s larger and more sporting models, but that accessibility is part of the CD175’s appeal. Auction results vary considerably according to condition and originality, illustrating a market where particularly good examples can command a substantial premium over tired or incomplete machines.
As with many smaller Japanese motorcycles of the era, originality is becoming increasingly important. Correct paintwork, exhausts, mudguards, instruments and other difficult-to-replace factory components can significantly enhance desirability. Many CD175s were simply used up, modified or discarded when their values were low, making complete and correctly presented survivors increasingly interesting to collectors.
The CD175 is unlikely to command the headline values of Honda’s iconic CB performance machines, but its combination of nostalgia, affordability, usability and diminishing numbers gives it genuine collector appeal. For enthusiasts who remember these motorcycles as everyday sights on the roads of the 1970s, a well-preserved CD175 offers something particularly valuable: an authentic and increasingly uncommon reminder of an era when Honda was transforming everyday motorcycling.
