Description
Few British sports cars capture the spirit of the 1970s quite like the Triumph TR6.
Introduced in 1969 as the successor to the TR5/TR250, the TR6 represented the final evolution of Triumph’s traditional six-cylinder, separate-chassis sports cars. With its muscular proportions, long bonnet, squared-off styling and unmistakable exhaust note, the TR6 combined classic British roadster character with a more purposeful, modern appearance. Today, it remains one of the most recognisable and desirable models in Triumph’s celebrated TR series.
Styled by German coachbuilder Karmann, the TR6 retained much of its predecessor’s underlying engineering while introducing a distinctive new front and rear design. Beneath the bonnet sat Triumph’s robust 2.5-litre straight-six engine, delivering smooth, flexible performance and a wonderfully characteristic soundtrack. British-market examples featured Lucas mechanical fuel injection, producing approximately 150 bhp, while North American export models employed twin carburettors and a lower state of tune. With its four-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and independent rear suspension, the TR6 offered an engaging and rewarding driving experience that remains every bit as appealing today.
The 1971 Triumph TR6 represents a particularly attractive period in the model’s production, combining early styling details with the performance and mechanical character that made these cars so popular. Its low-slung driving position, traditional wood-veneer dashboard and open-top motoring experience evoke an era when sports cars were designed primarily for the enjoyment of driving. Now firmly established as a sought-after British classic, the TR6 continues to attract enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, admired for its timeless styling, mechanical simplicity and unmistakable six-cylinder personality.

About this Vehicle
The Triumph TR6 is pure 1970s attitude on wheels. Long bonnet, muscular proportions and a straight-six soundtrack that is unmistakably British. Fire it up and you’re greeted by that wonderful six-cylinder growl, a reminder of an era when sports cars were all about the driving experience rather than electronic gadgets and driver assistance. The TR6 is old-school cool, the kind of cool that doesn’t need to try too hard.
On the road, the TR6 is lively, engaging and just a little bit mischievous. There’s plenty of character in the way it accelerates, corners and responds to driver input. With the roof down and that straight-six singing away, even a short Sunday drive becomes something of an occasion. It’s the sort of classic that attracts smiles, starts conversations and reminds you why British sports cars have remained so popular for generations.
As for this particular 1971 example, there’s plenty to like:
-
NZ NEW – Originally supplied new in New Zealand, adding to its local history and appeal.
-
Ownership History – Nine owners recorded since new, with an impressive 38 years shared between just four owners.
-
Overall Condition – Presents very well, with what appears to be a sound body, very good paintwork and a tidy, well-kept interior.
-
Previous Restoration – We understand the car underwent a light restoration approximately three years ago, although no restoration or mechanical records accompanied the vehicle.
-
Mileage – The odometer displays approximately 94,000 miles, which appears consistent with the car’s overall presentation, although this has not been independently verified.
-
Odometer – Recorded in miles, rather than kilometres.
-
Driving Enjoyment – A wonderfully characterful British roadster, offering the sights, sounds and sensations that make classic open-top motoring so enjoyable.
-
Summer Motoring – An appealing classic to enjoy over the warmer months, whether for weekend outings, club gatherings or leisurely country drives.
Inside, it’s all traditional British sports car charm. Wood-veneer dashboard, classic instrumentation, low seating position and just the essentials. No digital screens or unnecessary distractions, simply a cockpit designed around the driver. There’s something refreshingly honest about the TR6, and that’s a large part of its enduring appeal.
All things considered, this is a very appealing example of one of Britain’s most recognisable sports cars. With its NZ-new provenance, attractive presentation and unmistakable six-cylinder character, it offers plenty of enjoyment for the next custodian. A great fun car for summer, and one that proves the journey can be every bit as enjoyable as the destination.
Market Review
The Triumph TR6 has long been one of the most popular and recognisable British sports cars of its generation, and for good reason. Combining muscular styling, a wonderfully characterful straight-six engine and the simple pleasures of open-top motoring, the TR6 delivers a driving experience that modern cars struggle to replicate. There’s an enormous sense of nostalgia associated with these cars, particularly among enthusiasts who remember the golden era of British sports car motoring. Whether it’s a leisurely Sunday drive, a classic car gathering or simply enjoying the sunshine with the roof down, the TR6 offers something increasingly difficult to find in today’s motoring world: genuine character, mechanical involvement and sheer driving enjoyment.
From a collectibility perspective, the TR6 occupies an appealing position in the classic car market. Its distinctive styling, strong enthusiast following, established owners’ clubs and good availability of replacement parts have helped maintain its popularity over the decades. As the last of Triumph’s traditional six-cylinder TR roadsters, it also holds an important place in British motoring history. Early examples, particularly those with desirable specifications, sound bodywork, originality and well-documented histories, continue to attract collector interest. For New Zealand buyers, locally delivered examples can offer additional appeal, particularly where ownership history is known and the car has remained in the country since new.
Over the longer term, TR6 values have appreciated considerably from the days when these cars were regarded simply as inexpensive second-hand sports cars. However, like much of the classic car market, values have moderated from their post-pandemic highs, with recent international sales showing a more selective market. Well-presented, mechanically sound examples with desirable specifications and good provenance remain particularly appealing, offering the prospect of long-term collectibility rather than guaranteed financial appreciation.
Ultimately, the TR6’s greatest attraction is that it can be both enjoyed and cherished. It’s an affordable entry into traditional six-cylinder British sports car ownership, a nostalgic reminder of a wonderful motoring era, and a classic whose enduring popularity should help sustain enthusiast interest for many years to come.
