Description
Few American luxury cars capture the spirit of the early 1970s quite like the 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III Coupe!
Introduced for the 1969 model year, the Mark III represented Ford Motor Company’s determination to challenge Cadillac at the very top of the American personal luxury car market. With its imposing proportions, distinctive Rolls-Royce-inspired upright grille, concealed headlights, long bonnet and unmistakable Continental spare-wheel hump incorporated into the boot lid, the Mark III was a statement of prestige, sophistication and unmistakable American style. Its elegant two-door coupe body combined bold styling with an understated sense of exclusivity, making it one of the most recognisable luxury automobiles of its era.
Beneath that magnificent bonnet sits Lincoln’s formidable 460 cubic-inch (7.5-litre) V8 engine, producing approximately 365 horsepower in its original factory specification and coupled to a smooth three-speed automatic transmission. Performance was delivered effortlessly, with an abundance of torque providing the relaxed, commanding driving experience expected of a premium American grand touring automobile. Inside, the Mark III offered an exceptionally luxurious environment, with deep, generously proportioned seating, extensive sound insulation, power-assisted conveniences and an impressive level of refinement. Power steering, power brakes and a suspension engineered for comfort ensured that travelling in a Continental was every bit as enjoyable as arriving in one.
Today, the 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III stands as a wonderful reminder of an era when American luxury motoring was defined by generous dimensions, powerful V8 engines and extraordinary attention to comfort and presence. Built at a time when personal luxury coupes were becoming increasingly fashionable, the Mark III successfully established its own identity alongside the Cadillac Eldorado and helped define Lincoln’s flagship Continental models for years to come. With its unmistakable styling, impressive road presence and beautifully relaxed driving characteristics, the Mark III remains a desirable collector’s automobile, particularly for enthusiasts who appreciate the glamour, individuality and unapologetic extravagance of classic American motoring.

Market Review
The 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III occupies a special place in the history of American luxury motoring, representing an era when prestige, glamour and extravagance were central to automotive design. Conceived as a direct competitor to the Cadillac Eldorado, the Mark III was aimed at discerning buyers who appreciated exclusivity, distinctive styling and exceptional comfort. Although successful in its day, surviving examples in good condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly outside the United States. In markets such as New Zealand, these magnificent American luxury coupes are relatively uncommon, adding considerably to their appeal among enthusiasts seeking something distinctive and seldom seen on local roads.
From a collector’s perspective, the Mark III offers a fascinating combination of imposing styling, mechanical simplicity and genuine luxury. Its magnificent 460 cubic-inch V8, sumptuous interior, effortless automatic transmission and beautifully cushioned ride capture the very essence of American grand touring at its finest. Unlike the more sporting European grand tourers of the period, the Continental was designed to transport its occupants in supreme comfort, with an unmistakable sense of occasion. Its dramatic proportions, concealed headlights, elegant roofline and signature Continental boot lid give it a timeless presence, while its association with the glamour and prosperity of late-1960s and early-1970s America only adds to its nostalgic charm and desirability.
Today, the Lincoln Continental Mark III enjoys an established following among collectors of classic American automobiles, particularly those who appreciate originality, condition and the distinctive character of the personal luxury coupe era. While these cars have traditionally remained more affordable than certain high-profile American muscle cars, their relative scarcity in overseas markets, increasing age and unmistakable styling make well-preserved examples particularly interesting. Values remain influenced by condition, provenance, originality and maintenance history, but the Mark III’s appeal extends well beyond financial considerations. For the enthusiast seeking a magnificent classic with genuine road presence, exceptional cruising comfort and a generous helping of old-world American glamour, the 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III represents a wonderfully rewarding and increasingly uncommon ownership experience.
