Description

Few British sports cars capture the spirit of the 1960s quite like the Triumph TR5 PI.

Produced for just 13 months between 1967 and 1968, the TR5 represented a significant milestone in Triumph’s sporting heritage, combining the elegant Michelotti-designed bodywork of the TR4A with an entirely new level of performance. With only 2,947 fuel-injected TR5s produced, it remains one of the rarest and most desirable models in the celebrated TR series, highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

At the heart of the TR5 PI lies its remarkable 2.5-litre, straight-six engine equipped with Lucas mechanical petrol injection, producing an impressive 150 bhp in original UK specification. This made the TR5 one of the first British production sports cars to feature petrol injection, delivering exhilarating performance for its era, with a 0–60 mph time of approximately eight seconds and a top speed approaching 120 mph. Combined with its four-speed manual gearbox, available overdrive and independent rear suspension, the TR5 offered a wonderful balance of traditional British roadster character and sophisticated engineering.

Today, the Triumph TR5 PI is widely regarded as one of the finest achievements of the Triumph marque. Its beautifully proportioned bodywork, distinctive six-cylinder soundtrack, lively performance and engaging driving characteristics have secured its place among the most sought-after British classics of the 1960s. Produced in comparatively small numbers and enjoying an enduring international following, the TR5 PI represents a particularly appealing combination of rarity, historical significance and genuine driving enjoyment — a true driver’s classic that continues to command admiration nearly six decades after its introduction.

About this Vehicle

We are delighted to present this particularly fine example of the highly collectible Triumph TR5 PI, an original factory right-hand-drive, UK home-market car, retaining its original engine, drivetrain and factory colour combination. With just 2,947 TR5 PI models manufactured during its brief production run, and an estimated 400 examples believed to survive worldwide, opportunities to acquire a genuine TR5 of this calibre are becoming increasingly scarce.

Originally supplied new by F.J. Chalke & Sons of Talbot Garage, Mere, Wiltshire, England, this TR5 has an interesting and well-documented history. The car subsequently made its way to New Zealand, where it was first registered in 1974. Remarkably, it continues to display its original New Zealand black registration plates issued upon its arrival, a wonderful period detail that adds considerably to its provenance and character.

Of particular importance is the car’s authenticity. It retains its original CP/556-E 2,500cc petrol-injected six-cylinder engine, together with its factory-issued commission number CP674. Equally significant is the retention of its original factory colour scheme and black interior trim, preserving the specification in which it left the Triumph factory.

A Restoration Undertaken with Authenticity in Mind

During 2022–2023, this TR5 underwent an extensive and carefully executed body-off-chassis restoration, with particular emphasis placed on preserving its original identity, mechanical specification and period-correct appearance. Rather than simply producing a visually impressive restored car, considerable effort was invested in ensuring that the finished result remained as faithful as possible to the vehicle’s original factory configuration.

This commitment to authenticity extended to sourcing rare and increasingly difficult-to-find components from the United Kingdom. Among these were a correct TR5 PI fuel metering unit, the appropriate threaded fuel injectors and, notably, an exceptionally scarce original factory steering wheel. These are the finer details that distinguish a thoughtfully restored TR5 from a more conventional restoration, particularly for collectors who understand the importance of correct mechanical components and original specifications.

The car also retains its Type A overdrive gearbox and original drivetrain, an important consideration given the significance of mechanical originality in a vehicle of this rarity. The combination of its original engine, factory specification, careful restoration and supporting documentation makes this a particularly appealing example for the discerning Triumph enthusiast.

Concours Recognition

The quality of the restoration and overall presentation has also been recognised within the Triumph enthusiast community. At a recent concours event held in Christchurch, New Zealand, this TR5 achieved two notable awards:

  • Second Place – TR4/TR5 Standard Class Concours
  • People’s Choice Award

The concours placing reflects the standard of the vehicle’s presentation, while the People’s Choice Award is particularly pleasing, demonstrating the admiration this beautiful Triumph attracts from fellow enthusiasts and the wider public alike.

Documentation, Inspection & Further Information

Accompanying the vehicle is its original Heritage Certificate, providing important confirmation of its factory identity and specification, together with a Triumph TR5 PI handbook. Photographic records documenting various stages of its extensive 2022–2023 restoration are also available, offering prospective purchasers valuable insight into the work undertaken and the care invested in the vehicle.

All inspections are warmly welcomed and encouraged. We appreciate that a vehicle of this significance deserves careful consideration, and we are happy to accommodate independent inspections for prospective purchasers.

In summary, this is considerably more than simply another restored British sports car. It is a rare, original right-hand-drive Triumph TR5 PI with a fascinating history, original mechanical identity, extensive restoration, supporting documentation and recent concours recognition. For the serious collector or enthusiast seeking an authentic example of one of Triumph’s most desirable sporting models, this represents a particularly attractive opportunity.

Market Review

The Triumph TR5 PI occupies a particularly desirable position in the international classic car market, combining exceptional rarity with genuine historical significance and outstanding driving appeal. With just 2,947 examples manufactured during its brief production run between 1967 and 1968, the TR5 PI is considerably rarer than many of its Triumph contemporaries. Its distinction as one of Britain’s pioneering fuel-injected production sports cars, coupled with its powerful six-cylinder engine and timeless Michelotti styling, has established it as one of the most collectible models in the TR family. Unlike more commonly encountered TR4s and TR6s, the TR5 PI offers collectors the added attraction of limited production, technical significance and an unmistakable sense of exclusivity.

The market for the TR5 PI extends well beyond the United Kingdom, with established enthusiast and collector interest throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Particularly significant is the distinction of being an original factory right-hand-drive example, rather than a later conversion. Of the 2,947 TR5s produced, just 1,161 were manufactured for the British home market in right-hand-drive specification, making these cars especially appealing to collectors who value authenticity and factory provenance. Originality, matching numbers, documented history, correct mechanical specifications and overall condition are increasingly important considerations for discerning buyers. For collectors seeking a genuine British sports car with international recognition, the TR5 PI offers a compelling combination of exclusivity, heritage and enduring desirability.

In terms of values, the TR5 PI has established itself firmly among the more valuable and sought-after Triumph sports cars, commanding a substantial premium over the more plentiful TR4 and TR6 models. Recent international sales demonstrate considerable variation according to condition, originality and provenance, with recorded sales including £64000 for a right-hand-drive example in Britain in November 2025 and around NZ$120K, for examples sold by us in New Zealand. The broader market continues to distinguish exceptional, correctly presented cars from average examples, with originality and supporting documentation remaining important influences on value. Although classic car prices are subject to market fluctuations, the TR5 PI’s limited production, international following and historical significance provide strong foundations for its long-term collectibility. For the enthusiast who appreciates both investment-grade rarity and genuine driving pleasure, an original right-hand-drive TR5 PI remains a particularly desirable acquisition
