Description

The 1967 Pontiac Firebird 326 Convertible represents a defining chapter in American motoring history, combining unmistakable 1960s styling with the power and character of a genuine V8 muscle car. Introduced in 1967 as Pontiac’s answer to the rapidly growing pony car market, the Firebird quickly established an identity of its own. With its distinctive split grille, long sculpted bonnet, muscular proportions and elegant convertible bodywork, the first-generation Firebird remains one of the most recognisable and desirable American classics of its era.

Beneath the bonnet, the Pontiac 326 cubic-inch (5.3-litre) V8 delivers the effortless performance and unmistakable soundtrack that made American motoring of the 1960s so appealing. Unlike its more aggressive muscle car counterparts, the Firebird Convertible strikes an attractive balance between sporting performance, comfort and relaxed open-top cruising. Whether enjoying a leisurely Sunday drive or simply admiring its timeless lines, the Firebird offers an authentic driving experience from a period when style, individuality and the freedom of the open road were everything.

Today, the 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible is increasingly appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts for its historical significance, distinctive styling and relative rarity compared with its Chevrolet Camaro counterpart. As a first-year production model, it holds particular appeal, representing the beginning of a nameplate that would become an American performance icon. With its combination of classic Pontiac V8 power, open-air motoring and unmistakable road presence, the 1967 Firebird 326 Convertible is a wonderful reminder of an era when American manufacturers produced some of the most charismatic motor cars ever to grace the road.

About this Vehicle

Classic car collectors and old-school motoring enthusiasts have long held a special appreciation for the Firebird that started it all. Introduced in 1967, Pontiac’s answer to the increasingly popular pony car market quickly established itself as a serious contender, combining striking styling, V8 performance and a distinctive personality that set it apart from its rivals. With its aggressive split grille, sculpted bodywork and unmistakable Pontiac character, the first-generation Firebird remains one of the great American classics of the 1960s.

When Pontiac introduced the Firebird to dealerships in 1967, it was an immediate success, with 82,560 examples finding new owners in its inaugural year. Although Ford sold more than five times as many Mustangs that year, the Firebird’s first-year sales came remarkably close to matching those of the Mustang during its own debut year in 1964. It was an impressive achievement for Pontiac and the beginning of a performance legacy that would endure for decades.

This particular 1967 Pontiac Firebird 326 Convertible is a beautifully presented example, finished in an attractive Gold exterior with a complementary Gold deluxe interior. Originally a California black-plate car, it spent 18 years with one owner in the United States before eventually making its way to New Zealand, where it was first registered in 2018. It has remained with the same New Zealand owner ever since, reflecting a reassuring history of long-term ownership and careful preservation.

Condition & Driving Experience

One of the particularly appealing aspects of this Firebird is the originality of its bodywork. The car presents as a well-preserved example rather than one subjected to extensive body reconstruction. The Gold paintwork, applied more than 18 years ago, has stood the test of time remarkably well, while the renewed seat upholstery and carpeting complement the attractive deluxe interior. The power-operated convertible top is in very good condition, making this an equally enjoyable car with the roof raised or lowered.

Mechanically, the 326ci V8 provides the unmistakable sound and effortless torque that make these early Pontiac Firebirds such enjoyable classics. Paired with the Super Turbine 300 automatic transmission, power steering and power-assisted disc brakes, it offers a wonderfully relaxed driving experience. The combination of independent front suspension and a rear single-leaf spring arrangement also contributes to its road manners. In our opinion, these early Firebirds offer a particularly comfortable and composed ride, with a degree of refinement and predictability that we find preferable to their contemporary Chevrolet Camaro counterparts.

Our Thoughts

What makes this Firebird especially attractive is its combination of California heritage, long-term ownership, excellent original bodywork and desirable factory-style appointments. It is not simply another American convertible, but a genuine first-year example of a model that would go on to become one of Pontiac’s most celebrated performance cars. With its sweet running V8 engine, automatic transmission, power accessories and handsome Gold colour combination, it offers all the ingredients of an enjoyable and increasingly collectible American classic.

Whether destined for weekend cruising, classic car gatherings or simply taking pride of place in an enthusiast’s collection, this 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible has enormous appeal. It represents an era when American motoring was all about individuality, freedom and the enjoyment of the open road.

So there you have it, folks… the F-I-R-E-B-I-R-D. Remember that name. It’s one species of Pontiac you may well regret ‘fouling’ around with!

Market Review

The 1967 Pontiac Firebird occupies an important place in American automotive history, marking the beginning of one of General Motors’ most successful and recognisable performance nameplates. With 82,560 examples sold in its inaugural year, the Firebird established an enthusiastic following that continues to this day. First-year models are particularly appealing to collectors, while convertible examples enjoy an additional level of desirability thanks to their comparatively limited production numbers. In New Zealand, early Firebirds are relatively uncommon, particularly genuine 1967 convertibles with desirable V8 power, good provenance and sound original bodywork. Beyond their collectibility, these cars offer tremendous enjoyment, combining unmistakable American styling, effortless V8 performance and relaxed open-air cruising. They are equally at home at classic car gatherings, weekend outings or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon on the open road.

From a market perspective, first-generation Firebird convertibles have established themselves as desirable American classics, with values supported by their distinctive styling, limited convertible production and growing appreciation among enthusiasts. Recent American market results indicate that good 1967 Firebird 326 convertibles typically occupy the US$40,000–$55,000 bracket, with exceptional examples commanding considerably more. Although values fluctuate and appreciation is never guaranteed, the model has demonstrated encouraging long-term collector appeal, with originality, condition and documented history remaining important influences on value. In New Zealand, the limited availability of comparable examples adds to their appeal, particularly when considering the cost and effort involved in importing a suitable vehicle. We believe well-preserved, first-year V8 convertibles such as this represent an appealing opportunity to enjoy a distinctive piece of American motoring history, with the added prospect of capital appreciation over time. Unlike many collectible assets, however, the Firebird offers something money alone cannot measure: the sheer pleasure of dropping the roof, listening to that Pontiac V8 and enjoying classic American motoring as it was intended.
