Description

The 1964 Rover P4 110 represents the final chapter in one of Britain’s most distinguished lines of traditional luxury motor cars. Affectionately known as the “Auntie Rover”, the P4 series earned an enviable reputation for its exceptional build quality, understated elegance and engineering excellence. Introduced in 1962, the 110 was the most powerful and highly developed version of the P4 range, combining the dignified styling of an earlier era with improved performance and refinement. By the time production ended in 1964, the P4 had firmly established itself as one of Britain’s most respected executive saloons.

Beneath its imposing bonnet lies Rover’s smooth and remarkably durable 2.6-litre six-cylinder engine, producing approximately 123 bhp and coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. This combination gave the P4 110 considerably more spirited performance than its conservative appearance might suggest, while retaining the quiet, comfortable and effortless cruising characteristics for which Rover had become renowned. With its substantial construction, beautifully appointed interior, generous use of polished timber and traditional leather upholstery, the 110 offered a level of craftsmanship and refinement that remains impressive more than six decades later.

Today, the Rover P4 110 is increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts seeking an authentic example of British motoring heritage from an era when quality, durability and engineering integrity took precedence over fashion. Its distinctive styling, commanding road presence and wonderfully traditional driving experience make it a particularly appealing choice for the classic car enthusiast. As one of the last examples of the celebrated P4 series, the 1964 Rover 110 occupies a special place in Rover’s history, representing the end of an era and a standard of British craftsmanship that is unlikely ever to be repeated.

Ownership, Heritage & Collectability

One of the particularly appealing aspects of this Rover is its ownership history, having passed through just seven owners over more than six decades, many of whom enjoyed lengthy periods of custodianship. The most recent owner retained the vehicle for sixteen years, further reinforcing its appeal as a carefully preserved classic rather than one that has been frequently traded. Together with its low recorded mileage, accompanying documentation and excellent overall presentation, these qualities contribute to a motor car with genuine character and an appealing sense of continuity.

The Rover P4 110 occupies a special position in British motoring history. As one of the final models produced before the P4 range was discontinued in 1964, it represents the culmination of Rover’s traditional approach to luxury saloon manufacture. Increasingly scarce in well-preserved, presentable and road-ready condition, these cars are attracting renewed appreciation from enthusiasts who recognise the quality of their construction, mechanical integrity and wonderfully distinctive driving characteristics.

For the discerning enthusiast or collector, this 1964 Rover P4 110 offers considerably more than nostalgic appeal. It is a genuinely usable and characterful classic, equally suited to relaxed weekend touring, classic motoring events or inclusion in an established collection. With growing interest in well-preserved post-war British motor cars, the P4 110 represents an appealing and relatively accessible entry into traditional luxury motoring, with sound prospects for long-term collectability.

A beautifully preserved example of one of Rover’s most distinguished saloons, combining excellent presentation, desirable ownership history and refined driving characteristics in a classic British motor car that remains every bit as appealing today as it was more than sixty years ago.

Market Review

The Rover P4 110 occupies an increasingly interesting position within the classic car market, representing a generation of British motor cars built when quality, craftsmanship and engineering integrity were considered more important than production costs or passing trends. Affectionately remembered as the “Auntie Rover”, the P4 was once the preferred transport of professionals, successful businessmen and those who appreciated understated prestige. For many enthusiasts, these were proper motor cars, built with substance, character and a reassuring sense of permanence that is increasingly difficult to find in modern vehicles. The nostalgia associated with the marque remains particularly strong, evoking memories of an era when motoring was an occasion in itself, and ownership reflected an appreciation of traditional British engineering and refinement.

From a collectability perspective, the P4 110 is particularly desirable, being the most powerful and one of the final developments of Rover’s distinguished P4 series. With only approximately 1,500 examples manufactured, surviving vehicles are relatively scarce, especially those retaining their original character and presenting in excellent, road-ready condition. While values have historically remained modest compared with more fashionable British classics, this also presents an opportunity for enthusiasts to acquire a genuinely prestigious and well-engineered motor car at a fraction of the cost of many comparable marques. The market increasingly favours examples with sound bodywork, excellent presentation, documented history and long-term ownership, with the distinction between ordinary vehicles and exceptional survivors becoming more pronounced.

Looking ahead, the Rover P4 110 possesses many of the qualities that underpin enduring collector interest: limited production, historical significance, distinctive styling, mechanical durability and a strong connection with Britain’s post-war motoring heritage. Although appreciation in value is never guaranteed, the increasing difficulty of sourcing well-preserved examples provides a reasonable foundation for long-term collectability. Importantly, these cars offer something beyond financial considerations: the pleasure of owning and driving a beautifully constructed motor car from an era unlikely to be repeated. For the enthusiast who values authenticity, nostalgia and traditional craftsmanship over fashion, the Rover P4 110 remains one of the classic car market’s most appealing and arguably undervalued British luxury saloons.
