A Wonderful Jaguar to Drive
Stylish, capable and beautifully engineered, the Mk2 is without doubt one of Jaguar’s finest models. This well-sorted and cherished example is a genuine pleasure to drive and embodies everything that made the British sporting saloon so desirable. From the beautifully appointed cabin to the reassuring handling and effortless performance, there is something immensely satisfying about being behind the wheel of a properly restored Mk2.
On the road, the Jaguar retains a wonderful sense of civility and composure. The smooth six-cylinder engine, comfortable seating and excellent cruising characteristics make it a classic that feels perfectly capable of undertaking longer journeys with confidence. The manual gearbox and overdrive further enhance the experience, allowing the driver to enjoy both spirited motoring and relaxed open-road touring.
But the Mk2 is certainly not just about comfort and elegance. Beneath its sophisticated exterior lies a genuine sporting character. Press on a little harder and the legendary XK engine comes alive, delivering that unmistakable straight-six soundtrack and the spirited performance that helped establish Jaguar’s formidable reputation during the 1960s. Few classic saloons manage to combine refinement and sporting ability quite so successfully.
A Timeless Classic with Enduring Appeal
Perhaps no Jaguar better embodies Sir William Lyons’ famous philosophy of ‘Grace, Space and Pace’ than the Mk2. It possesses an unmistakable presence, an inviting and beautifully crafted interior, and a driving character that continues to delight enthusiasts more than six decades after leaving the factory.
Another significant attraction of Mk2 ownership is the tremendous support available to enthusiasts. An active international owners’ club community, knowledgeable Jaguar specialists and an excellent supply of replacement parts make these cars particularly rewarding classics to maintain and enjoy. Unlike many lesser-known classics, the Mk2 benefits from a well-established network of expertise and support.
Of course, as with any classic Jaguar, condition is everything. Restoration work can be both extensive and expensive, particularly where bodywork, mechanical components and interior refurbishment are concerned. Our advice has always been to avoid purchasing a cheap example simply because the initial asking price appears attractive. There is usually a reason why such cars are inexpensive, and the cost of bringing a neglected Mk2 up to a desirable standard can quickly exceed the value of the motor car itself.
Instead, seek out a properly restored, well-maintained example where the considerable expense and effort associated with restoration have already been undertaken. This is precisely what makes a Jaguar such as this one so appealing.
Our View
This is a seriously attractive Jaguar Mk2, beautifully presented and equally impressive on the road. The extensive restoration, lovely interior, desirable manual-overdrive transmission and attractive chrome wire wheels all contribute to a motor car that offers considerable appeal.
Importantly, this is not simply a classic to admire in the garage. It is a Jaguar that deserves to be driven, enjoyed and appreciated for the wonderful sporting saloon that it is.
Whether destined for weekend outings, classic motoring events, club gatherings or simply the pleasure of an occasional drive through the countryside, this 1964 Jaguar Mk2 3.4 Manual Overdrive offers a delightful ownership proposition.
Few classic motor cars deliver quite the same feel-good factor as a beautifully restored Jaguar Mk2. With its timeless styling, sporting pedigree and unmistakable British character, this is a motor car to enjoy, cherish and be proud of for many years to come.
Market Review
The Jaguar Mk2 has long enjoyed an enviable position in the international classic car market, with a strong following throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Widely regarded as one of the most handsome and accomplished sporting saloons of its generation, the Mk2 combines timeless British styling, genuine motorsport heritage and the enduring prestige of the Jaguar marque. Its international appeal is further strengthened by an established network of marque specialists, enthusiastic owners’ clubs and excellent parts availability. Among collectors, manual-overdrive examples are particularly desirable, offering a more engaging driving experience than their automatic counterparts. While the larger-engined 3.8-litre models traditionally command the highest premiums, the 3.4-litre Mk2 offers much of the same character, performance and elegance, often representing particularly attractive value for money.
The market for Jaguar Mk2s is increasingly selective, with condition, restoration quality, originality and mechanical specification playing a significant role in determining values. Recent British auction records place the median selling price of the 3.4-litre Mk2 at approximately NZD35K, although outstanding restored examples can command considerably more, with established valuation guides recognising prices approaching NZD65K to NZD75K for the finest cars.
While the broader market has experienced some price corrections in recent years, we believe properly restored, desirable examples continue to offer excellent long-term collector appeal. Importantly, the cost of undertaking a comprehensive restoration will way exceed the purchase price of a finished motor car, making examples such as this 1964 manual-overdrive Jaguar particularly attractive. With its extensive restoration, beautifully refurbished interior, rebuilt mechanical components and desirable chrome wire wheels, this Mk2 represents an opportunity to acquire a recognised British classic without facing the considerable time, expense and uncertainty of a restoration project. In our opinion, the finest examples will always attract discerning enthusiasts, and this is precisely the calibre of Jaguar we would recommend buying and enjoying for the years ahead.
