Description
The Golden Age of British Sports Motoring -Timeless Elegance, Sporting Character and Pure Driving Pleasure
Few British sports cars capture the romance, freedom and excitement of 1950s motoring quite like the magnificent MG MGA. Introduced during an era when Britain’s sports car industry was flourishing and British roadsters were winning admirers across the world, the MGA represented a bold departure from the traditional upright styling of its predecessors. With its beautifully sculpted bodywork, long sweeping bonnet, low-slung silhouette and graceful flowing wings, the MGA brought a new level of sophistication and sporting elegance to the MG marque. It was a motor car that looked every bit as exciting standing still as it did traveling along an open country road, perfectly capturing the optimism, glamour and adventurous spirit of the post-war years.
Unveiled in 1955, the MGA marked a significant turning point in MG’s history, replacing the traditional styling of the TF with an entirely new generation of modern British sports car design. Beneath its elegant bodywork lay a robust and dependable four-cylinder engine, a four-speed manual gearbox and a beautifully balanced chassis that delivered responsive handling and an engaging driving experience. The 1958 model belongs to the highly regarded early MGA 1500 series, powered by the lively 1.5-litre B-Series engine, offering an appealing combination of mechanical simplicity, spirited performance and traditional open-top motoring. Its success was remarkable, particularly in overseas markets, where the MGA helped establish MG as one of the world’s most recognisable and respected British sports car manufacturers.
Today, the MGA remains one of the most admired and instantly recognisable British roadsters of its generation, cherished for its timeless styling, sporting heritage and wonderfully uncomplicated driving character. More than six decades after its introduction, its elegant proportions and distinctive personality continue to attract enthusiasts and collectors throughout the world. Unlike many classics that are appreciated primarily for their historical significance, the MGA remains a motor car that invites its owner to get behind the wheel and enjoy the experience. Whether admired at a classic motoring event, enjoyed on a leisurely weekend drive or treasured as part of a collection, the 1958 MG MGA represents everything that made the golden age of British sports motoring so memorable – style, character, freedom and the simple pleasure of driving.

About this Vehicle
British Sporting Elegance – Beautifully Restored, Exceptionally Presented and an Absolute Delight to Drive!
There are classic sports cars that look beautiful, and there are those that deliver a genuinely rewarding driving experience. The magnificent MGA manages to do both with remarkable ease. Representing one of the most celebrated chapters in British sports car history, the MGA combines elegant styling, responsive handling and wonderfully engaging performance in a package that remains every bit as appealing today as it was when new.
Our particular 1958 MGA 1500 Roadster is an outstanding example, having undergone an extensive restoration around 2015, with many of the replacement components sourced from the renowned British MG parts specialist, Moss Europe Ltd. The quality of that work remains evident today, with beautifully presented bodywork, excellent paintwork and a superb leather interior. The result is a motor car that presents exceptionally well, retaining all the character and authenticity of a traditional British roadster while benefiting from the considerable investment made in its restoration and subsequent maintenance.
What makes this MGA particularly special, however, is that its mechanical performance and driving characteristics are every bit as impressive as its appearance. The engine feels lively and responsive, the four-speed manual gearbox is a pleasure to operate, and the car displays the wonderfully balanced road manners for which the MGA became famous. This is not simply a beautifully restored classic intended to be admired in a collection. It is a genuinely enjoyable sports car that encourages its owner to get behind the wheel and experience the pleasures of traditional open-top motoring.

Restoration, Condition and Presentation
The restoration undertaken around 2015 was clearly a substantial exercise, involving considerable attention to the car’s cosmetic presentation and mechanical condition. The use of components supplied by Moss Europe Ltd is particularly reassuring, given the company’s longstanding association with the preservation and restoration of classic MG motor cars.
Importantly, the quality of that work has endured. The bodywork remains beautifully presented, with attractive panel alignment and excellent paintwork, while the leather-trimmed interior retains a wonderfully fresh and inviting appearance. The original instruments remain in place and function as intended, contributing to the authenticity and traditional character of the cabin.
The beige folding soft top is also in excellent condition, complementing the overall presentation and providing the practicality expected of a classic roadster intended for regular enjoyment. Together, these features create an MGA that feels properly restored, carefully maintained and ready for its next chapter.
The accompanying receipts and service records are another welcome feature, providing useful insight into the attention and investment the vehicle has received over the years. The documented engine work undertaken by Paramount Engineering in Silverdale during 2016 further demonstrates the commitment made to maintaining the car’s mechanical condition.
Driving Experience – Where the MGA Truly Excels
While the MGA’s beautiful styling may initially attract attention, it is the driving experience that ultimately explains why these motor cars have remained so popular for generations.
Even in its original 1500cc specification, the MGA is a lively and engaging performer. The four-cylinder engine responds enthusiastically, delivering the sort of spirited performance that makes driving on winding country roads an absolute pleasure. The four-speed manual gearbox adds to the involvement, while the direct steering provides a genuine connection between driver and road.
One of the MGA’s greatest strengths is its remarkably accomplished chassis. The combination of independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a traditional live rear axle delivers predictable handling, good directional stability and a level of ride comfort that remains impressive for a sports car of this vintage.
Body roll is well controlled by the standards of the period, allowing the car to negotiate winding roads with confidence and enthusiasm. The drum braking system is entirely appropriate to the model’s performance, although, as with any classic vehicle, it rewards a measured driving style and an appreciation of period mechanical characteristics.
Our particular example drives exceptionally well. It feels responsive, well balanced and thoroughly enjoyable, with the sort of mechanical character and personality that modern sports cars often struggle to replicate. Equally importantly, it is sufficiently comfortable and refined to make longer journeys a genuine pleasure rather than an endurance exercise.
This is a classic that can be driven regularly, enjoyed on extended touring adventures or simply taken out on a beautiful Sunday morning for the sheer pleasure of motoring.
The Economics of Buying a Properly Restored MGA
One of the most compelling aspects of this particular motor car is the considerable investment already made in its restoration and maintenance.
Anyone familiar with the restoration of British sports cars will appreciate that achieving this standard of presentation is neither straightforward nor inexpensive. Bodywork repairs, paint preparation, chrome finishing, interior trimming, mechanical rebuilding and the sourcing of quality replacement components can quickly turn an apparently affordable restoration project into a substantial financial undertaking.
In our estimation, commissioning a comprehensive restoration to a comparable standard today could readily exceed NZ$100,000, depending on the condition of the starting vehicle and the extent of work required. That is before allowing for the purchase of the donor car itself, unforeseen complications and the considerable time involved in completing such a project. Oh and did we mention regulation?
This is precisely why purchasing an already restored and properly maintained example can make considerably more financial sense than attempting to restore a lesser vehicle.
Of course, not all restored MGA’s are equal. Cosmetic presentation alone tells only part of the story, and prospective buyers should always consider structural integrity, mechanical condition, restoration quality and supporting documentation. The apparent simplicity of these cars can be misleading, particularly where previous repairs or restoration work have not been undertaken to an appropriate standard.
In this instance, the combination of attractive presentation, documented restoration expenditure, subsequent mechanical work and excellent driving characteristics makes a persuasive case for acquiring a car in which much of the expensive work has already been completed.
A Particularly Fine Example
Having handled and experienced a wide variety of British classics over the years, we consider this MGA to be one of the more attractive examples available in New Zealand. Its presentation is excellent, its driving characteristics are thoroughly enjoyable, and the investment made in its restoration is clearly reflected in the overall quality of the motor car.
It is also a wonderful reminder of what made MG such an important name in international sports car history. The MGA introduced an entirely new design philosophy for the company, combining contemporary styling with traditional British engineering and the sporting character that had established MG’s reputation around the world.
More than six decades later, that formula remains remarkably successful.
For the serious collector, the British sports car enthusiast or anyone seeking a beautifully restored classic that can be genuinely enjoyed, this 1958 MGA 1500 Roadster represents an exceptional opportunity.
A stunning motor car, beautifully presented, mechanically rewarding and carrying the benefit of substantial restoration expenditure already undertaken.
In our view, finding a better-balanced combination of style, condition, driving enjoyment and value for money in a classic British roadster would be no easy task.
Market Review
The MGA has firmly established itself as one of the most recognisable and desirable British sports cars of the post-war period, enjoying a loyal international following that extends across generations and geographical boundaries. Its enduring popularity is supported by an established network of enthusiasts, specialist suppliers and active owners’ clubs throughout Britain, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. From a collectibility perspective, the MGA occupies an attractive position in the market, offering the heritage and prestige of a genuine 1950s British sports car without the extraordinary acquisition costs associated with more exotic marques. While values have experienced fluctuations in recent years, the model’s international recognition, finite supply and timeless appeal continue to support its long-term desirability. Importantly, knowledgeable collectors increasingly distinguish between ordinary examples and those benefiting from high-quality restoration, documented history and exceptional presentation, with the latter generally commanding stronger interest and providing a more compelling ownership proposition.
Classic motor cars also offer an interesting alternative to conventional investments, particularly for enthusiasts seeking to diversify into tangible assets. Unlike cash, which gradually loses purchasing power through inflation, a desirable collector car has the potential to retain or increase its nominal value over time, particularly as restoration costs, replacement components and skilled labour become progressively more expensive. However, classic cars are not a guaranteed hedge against inflation, and market values fluctuate. The strongest argument for acquiring a quality example is therefore not speculation on short-term price movements, but the opportunity to own an established collectible whose desirability may endure over the longer term. In New Zealand, where the availability of properly restored British sports cars is comparatively limited, purchasing an excellent example can be particularly attractive when weighed against the substantial expense of importing or restoring a similar vehicle. For the discerning buyer, the combination of established international demand, limited supply and the considerable cost of reproducing a high-quality restoration provides a sound rationale for considering a well-presented MGA as a long-term collectible.
Perhaps the greatest attraction of classic car ownership, however, is something that cannot be measured on a financial balance sheet. Unlike shares, bonds or money sitting in a bank account, a classic sports car offers the opportunity to enjoy the asset while you own it. The pleasure of an open-top drive through New Zealand’s beautiful countryside, participation in classic motoring events, friendships formed through enthusiast communities and the simple satisfaction of owning something genuinely special all contribute to a lifestyle that extends far beyond financial considerations. There is also the nostalgic appeal of preserving a motor car from an era when motoring represented freedom, adventure and individuality. Ultimately, the MGA offers an appealing combination of collectibility, potential long-term value retention and genuine lifestyle enjoyment. While financial appreciation can never be guaranteed, few other tangible assets offer the same opportunity to preserve a piece of history, enjoy it regularly and potentially recover a meaningful proportion of the investment when the time eventually comes to pass it on to another enthusiast.
