Description
The 1957 MGA Mark I represents one of the most significant turning points in the history of MG, introducing a completely new generation of British sports car that combined elegant styling, spirited performance and traditional open-top motoring. First unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955, the MGA was a dramatic departure from the upright styling of its T-Series predecessors. With its beautifully sculpted bodywork, flowing wings, low seating position and distinctive oval grille, the MGA introduced a fresh, modern appearance that would establish it as one of the most recognisable British sports cars of the 1950s.
Beneath its attractive bodywork, the MGA retained the simplicity and mechanical robustness for which MG had become renowned. Powered by a lively 1,489cc four-cylinder B-Series engine, producing approximately 68 horsepower in its original specification, and coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox, the MGA offered an engaging and rewarding driving experience. Its independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and well-balanced chassis provided responsive handling, making it equally enjoyable on winding country roads or during leisurely weekend outings. Although outright performance was modest by modern standards, the MGA delivered precisely the kind of uncomplicated, driver-focused motoring that made British sports cars so popular throughout the world.
Today, the MGA Mark I remains a highly regarded and desirable classic, admired for its timeless styling, mechanical simplicity and important place in British motoring history. Its success, particularly in export markets such as North America, helped establish MG as an internationally recognised sports car manufacturer, with more than 100,000 MGAs produced across all variants between 1955 and 1962. The 1957 example belongs to the early 1500cc generation and captures the charm and character of the original design. With its unmistakable 1950s appearance, traditional roadster driving experience and enduring enthusiast following, the MGA continues to represent an appealing entry into the world of classic British sports car ownership.

About this Vehicle
An Exceptional, Fully Restored Example with Remarkable Provenance and History.
High in style and high in spirit, the MGA marked the beginning of a bold new era for MG. Sleek, low-slung and unmistakably modern for its time, it represented a complete departure from the upright sports cars that had come before it, establishing a new benchmark for British sports car design. Manufactured by The MG Car Company Ltd at Abingdon-on-Thames, England, the MGA quickly earned worldwide acclaim for its elegant styling, responsive handling and spirited performance, becoming one of the most successful and recognisable British sports cars of the post-war era.
The example offered here is particularly special, not simply for its outstanding presentation, but for its remarkable history, exceptional provenance and the extraordinary level of restoration undertaken. Originally manufactured for the North American market, this MGA has enjoyed a fascinating international journey through Canada, Australia and New Zealand, including more than four decades in the ownership of the same lady. Today, following an extensive, no-expense-spared restoration, it presents in near-concours condition, with an accompanying historical file that provides a fascinating account of its life spanning more than six decades.
What makes this MGA especially appealing is the combination of its originality, documented ownership history and the sheer quality of its restoration. Finished once again in its original Old English White, with a beautifully retrimmed leather interior, rebuilt mechanical components and exceptional attention to detail throughout, it represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a classic British roadster restored to a standard that would be extraordinarily expensive to replicate today.
Vehicle Identification and Early History
-
Manufacturer: The MG Car Company Ltd, Abingdon-on-Thames, England.
-
Model: MGA Mark I 1500 Roadster.
-
Chassis Number: HDR43/14067.
-
Engine Number: BP15GB4138.
-
Original Specification: Left-hand drive, North American export model.
-
Original Factory Colour: Old English White.
-
Production: Early MGA production, believed to have been manufactured during 1956 and subsequently identified as a 1957 model.
The history of this particular MGA is both interesting and unusually well documented. Originally supplied to the North American market, the car was reportedly first sold in Canada to a serviceman stationed in Germany. In 1959, it was purchased through North Shore Small Cars Ltd of North Vancouver, British Columbia, by a lady who would remain its devoted owner for the next 42 years.
In 1964, the MGA accompanied its owner to New Zealand, although its travels were far from over. Shortly after arriving, it was shipped to Brisbane, Australia, where it carried registration number NT 24.901. In October 1965, the car returned to Auckland before eventually making its way to Blenheim, where it would spend the remainder of its active motoring life.
-
Imported into New Zealand in 1964.
-
Subsequently shipped to Brisbane, Australia, and registered NT 24.901.
-
Returned to Auckland in October 1965 before relocating permanently to Blenheim.
-
Recorded mileage on its return to New Zealand was approximately 74,000 miles.
-
Insured at the time for NZ£550.
-
Issued the New Zealand registration plates which it remarkably retains today.
-
Remained with the same lady owner until her passing in 2001, aged 81.
Throughout its years in Blenheim, the MGA was maintained by Geoff Noad’s Energy Centre, with servicing generally consisting of routine mechanical maintenance and the work necessary to meet Warrant of Fitness requirements. Documentation from February 1999 records an odometer reading of 8,811 miles, believed to represent approximately 108,811 miles travelled in total. Its registration and Warrant of Fitness subsequently lapsed in August 1999, after which the vehicle was placed into storage.
Of particular historical interest is a 1963 New Zealand Women’s Weekly article relating to Rodney Brayshaw of the MG Car Company in Palmerston North, retained within the vehicle’s history file. This is believed to provide supporting evidence of the car’s conversion from its original left-hand-drive configuration to right-hand drive.
A Comprehensive Bare-Metal Restoration
The restoration of this MGA was undertaken with the clear objective of returning the vehicle to an exceptionally high standard while preserving as much of its original character and construction as possible. During dismantling, evidence of the car’s various colour changes became apparent, with four distinct layers of paint uncovered: its original Old English White, followed by pale blue, red and finally black.
Although the bodywork was cosmetically tired and required considerable attention, the underlying structure was found to be generally sound. Corrosion affecting the sills and door pillars was addressed comprehensively, while the chassis, suspension and various mechanical components proved to be in remarkably good condition considering the car’s age.
The restoration included:
-
Complete dismantling and extensive bare-metal restoration.
-
Chassis, suspension and smaller body components professionally sandblasted.
-
Larger body panels carefully stripped by hand to bare metal.
-
Extensive corrosion repairs using quality replacement sections supplied by Moss.
-
Complete renewal of floor timbers, sills and door pillars where required.
-
Original bodywork retained, apart from replacement front and rear bumpers.
-
Body panels carefully repaired, prepared and refinished to a very high standard.
-
Original Old English White factory colour faithfully reinstated.
-
Comprehensive rust-proofing and cavity wax protection applied throughout.
-
Copper grease used extensively on fasteners and fittings during reassembly.
The result is a beautifully presented MGA that reflects not only the financial investment involved, but also the considerable time, patience and attention to detail required to achieve a restoration of this calibre.
Fully Rebuilt Engine and Mechanical Components
Mechanical restoration was equally comprehensive, with the original engine entrusted to Classic Engine Shop in Tauranga for a complete rebuild. Upon dismantling, considerable sludge accumulation was discovered within the sump, indicating that the engine had received limited internal attention over the years. Rather than simply undertaking superficial repairs, the decision was made to rebuild the unit properly.
Mechanical work included:
-
Complete engine rebuild by Classic Engine Shop, Tauranga.
-
Cylinder block rebored and crankshaft reground.
-
New pistons and engine bearings installed.
-
Cylinder head comprehensively rebuilt.
-
Original generator and starter motor rebuilt and tested.
-
New ignition components fitted.
-
Replacement fuel pump installed.
-
Complete new electrical wiring loom.
-
New lighting components where required.
-
Original dashboard instruments retained and functioning correctly.
-
Brake and clutch master and slave cylinders re-sleeved.
-
Replacement wheel cylinders fitted.
-
New hydraulic brake pipes, flexible hoses and fuel lines installed.
-
Suspension and associated mechanical components comprehensively inspected and restored as required.
The extent of this work demonstrates the thoroughness of the restoration, with considerable emphasis placed on mechanical reliability and driving enjoyment rather than presentation alone.
Beautifully Restored Interior and Finishing Details
The interior has received the same meticulous attention as the exterior and mechanical components. Professionally retrimmed in leather, the cockpit presents beautifully while retaining the traditional character and simplicity that make the MGA such an enjoyable classic sports car.
-
Professionally retrimmed leather seats and door cards.
-
Correct replacement carpeting supplied by Moss Europe.
-
Replacement convertible hood fitted some years ago and remaining in near-new condition.
-
Original dashboard layout and instrumentation retained.
-

-
High-quality finishing and detailing throughout.
-
Restoration components sourced predominantly through Moss Europe, supplied locally by The MG Shop, Mount Maunganui.
The combination of its elegant Old English White exterior, beautifully finished interior and traditional open-top configuration captures everything that made the MGA such a desirable sports car when new.
Exceptional Historical Documentation
One of the most appealing aspects of this particular MGA is the extensive historical documentation accompanying the vehicle. Unlike many restored classics whose early histories have been lost over time, this example retains an impressive collection of original records tracing its ownership and movements across several countries.
The accompanying history file includes:
-
Original New Zealand Certificate of Registration.
-
Original British Columbia Motor Vehicle Licence documentation.
-
Original British Columbia Retail Buyer’s Agreement.
-
Original shipping documentation covering the vehicle’s return from Australia to New Zealand.
-
Original Australian and New Zealand insurance documentation.
-
Original Union Steam Ship Company shipping records.
-
Original Australian and New Zealand Customs documentation.
-
Historical Warrant of Fitness and servicing records.
-
Period correspondence and supporting historical material.
-
Extensive information relating to the vehicle’s restoration.
Such documentation adds considerable interest to an already exceptional motor car, providing tangible evidence of its fascinating history and long-term ownership.
Condition, Value and Collectability
Today, this MGA presents in what can fairly be described as near-concours condition. The quality of its restoration is evident throughout, from the beautifully finished bodywork and interior to the comprehensively rebuilt mechanical components and attention paid to the smallest details. It is a car into which an extraordinary amount of time, effort and money has been invested, with the finished result speaking for itself.
The financial reality of restoring a classic motor car to this standard should not be underestimated. With today’s labour rates, specialist restoration costs, replacement components, engineering work, upholstery and paintwork, it is entirely realistic to suggest that replicating a restoration of this magnitude could exceed NZ$150,000, particularly when starting with a vehicle requiring extensive dismantling and rebuilding. That figure is a restoration-cost estimate rather than an independent valuation, but it highlights the considerable value represented by an already completed example of this quality.
Importantly, this MGA offers considerably more than an attractive restoration. Its lengthy ownership history, original documentation, international provenance and retention of so many original components distinguish it from the many examples that have been restored without a comparable historical record.
Our Assessment
The MGA has long been regarded as one of the finest-looking British sports cars of its generation, and more than seventy years after its introduction, its appeal remains as strong as ever. Beautifully proportioned, mechanically straightforward and immensely enjoyable to drive, it represents an era when motoring was as much about the experience as the destination.
This particular MGA is unquestionably one of those special examples that deserves serious consideration. Its combination of exceptional presentation, comprehensive restoration, remarkable ownership history and extensive documentation places it in a category well beyond that of an ordinary restored roadster.
For the discerning enthusiast or serious collector seeking an MGA that has already benefited from the considerable expense and effort of a high-quality restoration, this is a particularly compelling opportunity. Finding another with such a fascinating history, this level of documentation and such outstanding presentation would be no easy task.
A truly beautiful example of an iconic British sports car, restored with little apparent compromise and offered at what we believe represents outstanding value for money.
Market Review
For the discerning collector who appreciates quality above all else, this MGA represents an opportunity to acquire a motor car of truly exceptional calibre. Its near-concours presentation is a testament to the extraordinary level of workmanship, financial commitment and attention to detail invested in its restoration. Every aspect of the vehicle reflects a determination to achieve a standard seldom encountered in the marketplace. Quite simply, this is an MGA for someone who is not prepared to compromise and who wishes to own what we believe is one of the finest examples of the model available in New Zealand.
As the classic car market continues to distinguish between ordinary examples and those of exceptional quality, provenance and presentation, motor cars of this standard occupy an increasingly desirable position among serious enthusiasts. The MGA has long enjoyed international recognition as one of Britain’s most elegant and successful post-war sports cars, supported by an established worldwide following and an enduring reputation for style, simplicity and driving pleasure. Examples combining outstanding restoration quality with genuine historical significance are particularly sought after, making this car an attractive proposition for collectors who recognise the importance of buying quality rather than simply buying on price.
From an investment perspective, there is considerable merit in acquiring a motor car where the substantial expense, time and uncertainty of a major restoration have already been absorbed by previous ownership. While future appreciation can never be guaranteed, the combination of enduring desirability, exceptional condition and documented provenance provides a sound basis for long-term collectibility. Above all, this MGA offers the satisfaction of owning something genuinely special: a beautifully restored British sports car that can be proudly displayed, enthusiastically driven and carefully preserved for future generations. For anyone seeking a top-tier MGA, this is an example that would be very difficult, and potentially considerably more expensive, to replicate.
