Description

Introduced in 1971, the Alfa Romeo Alfasud represented an exciting new chapter for the celebrated Italian manufacturer. Designed by the renowned Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, the Alfasud combined distinctive Italian styling with innovative engineering and an emphasis on driving enjoyment. Unlike Alfa Romeo’s traditional rear-wheel-drive models, the Alfasud adopted a front-wheel-drive layout, powered by a compact, horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer engine. The result was a remarkably well-balanced small family car that quickly earned a reputation for exceptional handling, responsive performance and an engaging driving experience.

By 1980, the Alfasud had firmly established itself as one of Europe’s most accomplished small cars, admired by motoring journalists and enthusiasts alike. Its low centre of gravity, precise steering, sophisticated suspension and spirited boxer engine gave it a sporting character that few contemporary competitors could match. While outwardly modest and practical, the Alfasud possessed the unmistakable personality of an Alfa Romeo, rewarding enthusiastic drivers with an experience far beyond what its engine capacity or everyday appearance might suggest.

Today, the Alfa Romeo Alfasud occupies a special place in Italian motoring history, representing an era when engineering innovation and driving pleasure took precedence over outright performance figures. Unfortunately, corrosion issues and the passage of time have claimed many examples, making well-preserved survivors increasingly difficult to find. For enthusiasts who appreciate originality, character and the distinctive qualities of classic Italian motor cars, the Alfasud remains a fascinating and increasingly collectible reminder of Alfa Romeo’s remarkable engineering heritage.

About this Vehicle

A Rare Italian Sporting Classic – Full of Character, Charm and Driving Enjoyment

Here is a wonderful opportunity to acquire an increasingly rare example of Alfa Romeo’s much-loved Alfasud 1500 Ti, a spirited little Italian sporting classic that has become considerably harder to find, particularly in sound, presentable condition. Renowned for its delightful boxer engine, superb handling and engaging driving characteristics, the Alfasud Ti remains one of those cars that reminds us just how much fun motoring used to be.

First registered new in Australia in 1980, this particular example subsequently made its way across the Tasman, receiving its first New Zealand registration in 1999. Having passed through the hands of just five New Zealand owners and showing just over 70,200 kilometres, it presents today in good overall condition, retaining much of the charm and personality that makes these sporting Alfas so appealing.

Finished in attractive white paintwork, complemented by distinctive Italian tricolour striping and a particularly nice set of wheels, this Alfasud Ti certainly looks the part. Its sporting appearance is matched by an equally enjoyable driving experience, with that unmistakable Alfa Romeo boxer-engine rasp providing a wonderful soundtrack every time you get behind the wheel.

Our Impressions

What makes this particular Alfasud Ti so appealing is its combination of rarity, attractive presentation and genuine driving character. It is not being represented as a concours restoration or an untouched museum piece, but rather as a good, honest and very presentable example of an increasingly scarce Italian sporting classic. The paintwork looks smart, the interior presents nicely, and the car has an appealing overall appearance that reflects the distinctive character of the model.

Out on the road, the little Alfa is every bit as entertaining as its reputation suggests. The boxer engine has that wonderful, unmistakable Alfa Romeo note, with a delightful rasp from the exhaust that adds enormously to the driving experience. Combined with its responsive handling, manual gearbox and lightweight construction, it delivers the sort of engaging, uncomplicated motoring pleasure that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in modern cars.

With good Alfasud Ti examples becoming increasingly scarce, particularly in this part of the world, this is a car that deserves serious consideration from enthusiasts and collectors alike. Whether destined for a growing collection, occasional weekend outings or simply the pleasure of owning something a little different, this charming 1980 Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1500 Ti offers an appealing combination of Italian sporting heritage, rarity and sheer driving enjoyment.

A delightful little Alfa with a big personality and that glorious boxer-engine soundtrack is worth experiencing for itself!

Market Review

The Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti has become an increasingly desirable classic among enthusiasts who appreciate the marque’s sporting heritage and distinctive approach to engineering. Once regarded simply as an affordable and entertaining small performance car, the Ti is now recognised as one of the most rewarding front-wheel-drive sporting saloons of its generation. Its lively boxer engine, exceptional handling, responsive steering and lightweight construction deliver a driving experience that remains thoroughly enjoyable by modern standards. The Ti’s sporting enhancements, distinctive styling and unmistakable Italian character make it particularly appealing to collectors seeking something more individual than the conventional classics of the period.

From a collectibility perspective, the Alfasud Ti benefits from a combination of historical significance, relative rarity and growing enthusiast appreciation. Corrosion problems during the model’s early years, together with decades of everyday use, resulted in a substantial reduction in surviving numbers, making sound, well-preserved examples increasingly difficult to locate. Consequently, originality, structural condition, mechanical integrity and documented history are particularly important considerations for prospective buyers. While values remain relatively accessible compared with those of many established Italian sporting classics, the best examples have attracted increasing attention as enthusiasts recognise their scarcity and the considerable expense involved in restoring a neglected car to a high standard.

Looking ahead, the Alfasud Ti has many of the qualities associated with an emerging collectible classic: distinctive engineering, genuine sporting credentials, limited surviving numbers and a strong connection to one of Italy’s most celebrated automotive manufacturers. Although future appreciation can never be guaranteed, the increasing difficulty of finding good examples provides a compelling argument for their long-term desirability. Above all, the Alfasud Ti represents an opportunity to own a classic Alfa Romeo that can be genuinely enjoyed rather than merely admired. For those who value character, driver involvement and individuality, this spirited little Italian offers an increasingly rare combination of affordable classic motoring, historical interest and potential long-term collectibility.
