Description
The 1996 Maserati Quattroporte 2.8 V6 represents a fascinating chapter in the history of one of Italy’s most celebrated automotive marques.
Combining understated Italian elegance with genuine sporting pedigree, the fourth-generation Quattroporte offered something distinctly different from the conventional European luxury saloons of its era. Designed by the renowned Marcello Gandini, its sharp, purposeful lines and compact proportions reflected Maserati’s determination to create a luxury four-door saloon with the character and performance of a thoroughbred Italian sports car.
Beneath the bonnet lies a formidable 2.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, producing approximately 284 horsepower and delivering the spirited performance for which Maserati had become renowned. With rear-wheel drive, responsive handling and an unmistakably Italian exhaust note, the Quattroporte offered an engaging driving experience that few contemporary luxury saloons could match. Its combination of turbocharged power, sophisticated engineering and sporting character made it a compelling alternative to the more familiar German executive cars of the 1990s.
Inside, the Quattroporte embraced traditional Italian craftsmanship, with beautifully appointed leather upholstery, polished wood trim and an atmosphere of exclusivity that reflected Maserati’s distinguished heritage. Produced in comparatively limited numbers, the fourth-generation Quattroporte remains an uncommon sight, particularly in New Zealand, where examples are seldom encountered. Today, these distinctive Italian saloons are increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts seeking something beyond the ordinary, offering an intriguing combination of rarity, performance, luxury and unmistakable Maserati character.

Market Review
Few luxury saloons of the 1990s could match the glamour, prestige and sheer individuality of the Maserati Quattroporte. Born from a marque synonymous with Italian aristocracy, motorsport heritage and exceptional engineering, the Quattroporte was never intended for the ordinary motorist. It was a car for those who appreciated exclusivity, sophistication and performance, without feeling the need to follow the crowd. While Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar dominated the executive luxury market, Maserati offered something considerably more exotic: a hand-finished Italian sports saloon with genuine supercar ancestry.
When new, the Quattroporte represented a substantial financial commitment, placing it firmly in the territory of the wealthy and discerning. To put its original prestige into perspective, the cost of such a motor car could be compared with the price of several residential properties in Christchurch during the mid-1990s. The notion of spending the equivalent of three Christchurch houses on a four-door motor car illustrates the extraordinary exclusivity associated with owning a Maserati at the time.
In New Zealand, the fourth-generation Quattroporte has always been an exceptionally uncommon motor car, with very few examples appearing on the market. Its rarity is part of its appeal, but equally important is condition. These sophisticated Italian machines demand knowledgeable ownership and appropriate maintenance, making well-preserved examples with sound mechanical histories particularly desirable. A Quattroporte retaining its original character, attractive paintwork, beautifully appointed interior and strong mechanical presentation offers something increasingly difficult to find in today’s classic car market.
From a collector’s perspective, the Quattroporte IV occupies an interesting position. Despite its prestigious origins, limited production and considerable original cost, values remain relatively accessible compared with many other exotic Italian motor cars. This creates an opportunity for enthusiasts to acquire a genuine Maserati without the enormous financial outlay normally associated with the marque. While not necessarily a vehicle purchased purely for investment appreciation, its rarity, distinctive Gandini styling and unmistakable Italian pedigree give it considerable appeal as a modern classic.
Ultimately, the 1996 Maserati Quattroporte 2.8 V6 is about far more than figures or performance specifications. It represents an era when luxury motor cars possessed genuine individuality, when craftsmanship mattered and when owning a Maserati was a statement of taste, success and exclusivity. For the enthusiast who appreciates glamour, prestige and something truly different, few four-door classics offer quite the same sense of occasion.
