Description
Few British sports cars capture the spirit of 1960s motoring quite like the 1967 MGB GT!
Combining timeless styling, everyday practicality and the unmistakable character of a traditional British sports car, the MGB GT remains one of the most recognisable and enduring classics of its era. Introduced in 1965 as the fixed-head coupe counterpart to the hugely successful MGB Roadster, the GT brought an entirely new dimension to the MGB range. Its beautifully proportioned fastback body, developed with the involvement of legendary Italian design house Pininfarina, transformed the familiar open-top sports car into an elegant grand tourer, offering the perfect balance of sporting appeal, refinement and usability.
Beneath its graceful lines, the MGB GT retained the proven mechanical simplicity that made the original MGB such an international success. Powered by BMC’s dependable 1798cc four-cylinder engine, producing approximately 95 horsepower, and driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox, the GT delivered an engaging and wonderfully authentic driving experience. Its responsive handling, low seating position and distinctive exhaust note made it a delight on winding country roads, while the enclosed cabin, generous luggage space and distinctive rear hatch provided a level of practicality seldom associated with traditional British sports cars. The result was a remarkably versatile sporting coupe, equally at home on a leisurely Sunday drive or an extended touring adventure.
Today, the 1967 MGB GT represents a particularly appealing chapter in British motoring history, belonging to the desirable early generation of chrome-bumper cars, before the styling and regulatory changes that would characterise later production. With its elegant proportions, traditional chrome detailing and wonderfully nostalgic driving character, these early examples continue to attract enthusiasts who appreciate the purity and charm of 1960s sports car design. More than half a century after its introduction, the MGB GT remains a highly regarded and accessible British classic, supported by an enthusiastic international following, excellent parts availability and a strong heritage. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, few cars offer such an appealing combination of period elegance, sporting pedigree, practicality and unmistakable British character.

Market Review
The MGB GT has steadily established itself as a desirable and increasingly collectible British classic, appealing to a broad spectrum of enthusiasts, from first-time classic car buyers to seasoned collectors seeking an affordable addition to their portfolios. While values have historically remained more accessible than those of many contemporary British sports cars, there is growing recognition of the GT’s place in the classic car market, particularly the earlier chrome-bumper examples. The 1967 model sits comfortably within this sought-after category, benefiting from its early production heritage and the increasing preference among collectors for cars that retain their original character and period-correct presentation. Well-preserved, matching-numbers examples with documented histories and minimal modifications are particularly appealing, with originality, condition and provenance becoming increasingly important factors in determining long-term collectibility.
Nostalgia remains one of the strongest driving forces behind the MGB GT’s enduring desirability. For many enthusiasts, these cars evoke memories of a period when British sports cars were a familiar sight on New Zealand roads, representing freedom, youthful ambition and the simple pleasures of motoring. As generations who grew up admiring, owning or aspiring to these cars seek to reconnect with their motoring past, the emotional appeal of the MGB GT continues to support collector interest. Importantly, the model also attracts younger enthusiasts drawn to the analogue driving experience and the satisfaction of owning something genuinely mechanical and historically significant. This combination of nostalgia, cross-generational appeal and an established international enthusiast community provides the MGB GT with a solid foundation of demand, helping distinguish it from less recognised classics competing for attention in an increasingly selective collector market.
From an investment perspective, the early MGB GT presents an appealing opportunity to combine motoring enjoyment with the potential for long-term capital preservation and appreciation. Unlike more speculative segments of the collector car market, the MGB GT benefits from an established following, relatively affordable maintenance, readily available replacement parts and a broad international market, all of which contribute to its ongoing appeal and marketability. Although values have experienced fluctuations and appreciation is never guaranteed, the best examples have demonstrated an ability to command meaningful premiums over average-condition cars, reinforcing the importance of buying quality rather than simply buying cheaply. With restoration costs continuing to rise, acquiring a sound, well-maintained and historically correct example can often represent better value than undertaking an extensive restoration. For the discerning enthusiast, a 1967 MGB GT offers an attractive balance of affordability, collectibility, nostalgia and potential future value, with the added advantage of being an investment that can be driven, enjoyed and appreciated rather than simply stored away.
