Description

This 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 represents an era when Rolls-Royce was already firmly established as the benchmark for refinement, craftsmanship and engineering excellence. Built at a time when every Rolls-Royce was very much an individual motor car, the 20/25 combined the dignity of the larger models with a more manageable and enjoyable driving experience.

Finished in a handsome burgundy with contrasting black wings, this example has tremendous period presence. The imposing Rolls-Royce radiator, large headlamps, wire wheels and whitewall tyres create a wonderfully elegant exterior, while inside, the beautifully figured timber dashboard, traditional instrumentation and black upholstery capture the atmosphere of British motoring in the early 1930s.

More than ninety years after it was built, the appeal of the 20/25 remains remarkably strong. It is a motor car to be enjoyed at an unhurried pace; the long bonnet stretching ahead, that unmistakable Rolls-Royce grille leading the way, and an abundance of mechanical character reminding you that you are driving something from a very different age. A magnificent piece of British motoring history and a particularly charming addition to any serious classic-car collection.

About this Vehicle
  • A very well-presented example, the car presents beautifully, with its burgundy coachwork, contrasting black wings, imposing chrome radiator and period whitewall tires giving it tremendous presence.
  • Beautifully appointed interior with rich timber, traditional instrumentation and black upholstery create exactly the atmosphere one expects from a pre-war Rolls-Royce.
  • A genuinely special pre-war motor car, built in 1933, this Rolls-Royce is now more than 90 years old and represents a very different era of hand-built luxury motoring.
  • Rolls-Royce supplied cars of this period as rolling chassis, with specialist coach builders creating the bodywork to the customer’s requirements. This makes specification, coachwork and individual history particularly important with surviving examples.
  • Limited production, we understand only 3,827 Rolls-Royce 20/25 chassis were produced between 1929 and 1936, making surviving cars a relatively uncommon sight today.
  • One of the great inter-war Rolls-Royces, the 20/25 became Rolls-Royce’s best-selling model of the inter-war period and remains one of the marque’s most recognised pre-war models.
  • Highly desirable open motoring, the open body style gives this example a particularly sporting and elegant character, making it equally appealing for relaxed Sunday motoring, club events, rallies or display.
  • Strong collector appeal, pre-war Rolls-Royces occupy a special place in motoring history, combining engineering, craftsmanship, coachbuilding and social history in a way few later cars can replicate.
  • A car to use and enjoy. This is not simply something to look at. The 20/25 was conceived as a more manageable Rolls-Royce for the private owner-driver, which remains an important part of its appeal today.
  • A wonderful piece of British motoring heritage for the enthusiast wanting something considerably more distinctive than the usual post-war classic. This 1933 Rolls-Royce offers an ownership experience all of its own.
  • Serviced and maintained by Bruce Mcilroy. car is well sorted (over NZD140K spent on upkeep and restoration in the last 3 years) – runs and drives great.

There is something undeniably special about owning a pre-war Rolls-Royce. More than ninety years after it was built, the 20/25 belongs to an increasingly rare and exclusive group of motor cars from an age when craftsmanship, elegance and engineering mattered more than mass production. It carries a sense of class and sophistication that cannot be recreated in a modern car, and wherever it goes, it has the presence to turn an ordinary journey into an occasion.

Yet ownership is about much more than prestige. These wonderful old cars open the door to an entire world of historic motoring, rallies, club events, concours gatherings and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. There is genuine fun in driving something so different: the mechanical involvement, the view down that magnificent bonnet and the conversations that inevitably begin whenever you stop. A Rolls-Royce such as this is not simply something to admire in the garage, it deserves to be driven, shared and enjoyed.

And while enjoyment should always come first, important pre-war motor cars also have the attraction of being tangible, finite pieces of motoring history. With surviving examples becoming increasingly difficult to replace, quality, provenance and individuality will continue to matter to collectors. No classic car can be guaranteed to appreciate in value, but a well-chosen 1933 Rolls-Royce offers something rather more rewarding than an ordinary investment: an asset you can see, touch, drive and enjoy while becoming its custodian for the next generation.

Market Review

The 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 represents a golden era of British motoring, when craftsmanship, engineering excellence and understated elegance defined the world’s most prestigious motor cars. Built at a time when Rolls-Royce was firmly established as the benchmark for luxury, the 20/25 remains a highly respected and desirable pre-war classic. Its beautifully engineered six-cylinder engine, refined driving characteristics and individually coachbuilt bodies make each surviving example a fascinating piece of motoring history. For collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate traditional craftsmanship and the heritage of the Rolls-Royce marque, the 20/25 offers a level of character, distinction and prestige that few other motor cars can match.

From a collectibility perspective, the Rolls-Royce 20/25 enjoys an established international following, particularly among enthusiasts in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and North America. Its appeal lies not simply in its famous badge, but in its authenticity, engineering quality and the individuality of its coachwork. Values vary considerably depending on body style, coach-builder, originality, condition, provenance and documented history. Particularly desirable examples with attractive coachwork and well-preserved interiors can command a premium, while the model as a whole offers an accessible entry into the world of pre-war Rolls-Royce ownership compared with some of the marque’s more exclusive Phantom models.

For the discerning collector, the 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 offers something increasingly difficult to find in modern motoring: genuine individuality, historical significance and an enduring sense of occasion. International auction results demonstrate continued interest in the model, although values remain selective and buyers place considerable importance on condition, provenance and the quality of restoration.

Unlike more fashionable collector cars, its appeal is less about performance or short-term investment potential and more about the pleasure and prestige of owning a distinguished piece of automotive history. Whether displayed in a private collection, enjoyed on leisurely outings or presented at prestigious motoring events, a fine 20/25 remains a motor car of considerable presence and connoisseur appeal. Its combination of Rolls-Royce pedigree, coach built elegance and international recognition ensures that it continues to occupy a respected place in the classic car market.
